Band Gladness: The Swell Sixteen! (Vote for the happier band!)
Who’s Gladder?
Well, we’re getting down even further. Only 16 Band Madness Bands stand at the time of this writing, and Band Sadness is coming to its conclusion with a likely win for Joy Division.
Well, this tournament is kind of the joy division, so to speak, of this site. We’ve created a happier counterpart to Band Sadness. It’s Band Gladness!
Vote for the happier band, and we’ll see who climbs the gladder ladder!
And the comment boards are going to be open underneath the poll so you can keep on talking about how happy you or these bands are.
Get Happy!
Remember, you’re NOT voting for the one you like better. You’re voting for the one you think is gladder! GLADDER, NOT BETTER!
Who is Gladder? The Beatles or De La Soul?
Who is Gladder? Jimmy Buffett or ABBA?
Who is Gladder? The Flaming Lips or Art Brut?
Who is Gladder? The Beach Boys or AFI?
Who is Gladder? The Polyphonic Spree or John Denver?
Who is Gladder? The Byrds or Cat Stevens?
Who is Gladder? Barenaked Ladies or the Monkees?
Who is Gladder? Tiny Tim or the Grateful Dead?

Ah, AFI was inevitably thrown into this side tournament… see, my difficulty in voting was whether we were referencing the lyrics or the lives of the band members themselves. I went on lyrical content. Otherwise, the Beach Boys went through various personal struggles, whereas AFI is generally very pleasant and happy (believe it or not).

Also, I am glad to see the inclusions of such artists as Tiny Tim and Art Brut. Hopefully people will actually take the time to check them out rather than dismiss their votes (I need to learn to post all of my thoughts within one comment).

There’s no way I can vote for Tiny Tim after hearing his seasonal classic “Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS Today.”
But AFI is both the saddest AND the gladdest.
Surrously, though, I was hoping there would be a Band Gladness.

AKA the most chemically imbalanced?

Yeah, that sounds pretty manic depressive to me. lol

Wow, the Beatles actually have some pretty depressing songs. De La Soul is wayyyyy gladder.

I agree with you.
Tiny tim of The Grateful Dead should be whois deader (I know more dead is correct) instead of who is galdder.

Hopefully Art Brut makes it into the tournament next year as well.
I can’t believe The Flaming Lips are winning this match. Read over some of their lyrics. Kinda depressing a lot of the time.

I bet a decent number of people are voting based off of “Do You Realize?”

I never actually thought “Do You Realize” was all that happy. It was about trying to be happy when you know you’re going to die and everybody else you know is as well. And I never listen to “She Don’t Use Jelly”. The radio killed that song when I was in high school.

Bob Denver vs. Polyphonic Spree is tough. On the one hand, you really can’t be happier than when you’re having a “Rocky Mountain High.” On the other hand, Polyphonic Spree made Nirvana’s “Lithium” sound like it was sung by a band of elementary school kids ACTUALLY on lithium. And they sing about the sun and crap like that.

“Do You Realize??” is insanely happy and optimistic, I could not disagree more. Also, between “Be My Head,” “It’s Summertime,” “What Is the Light?”, “Sleeping on the Roof,” and all the foam, giant animal costumes, and bouncy balls from their live shows, I really gotta mark down the Lips as one of the happiest goddamn bands ever.

It’s funny that you call AFI glad…because when I hear it, sometimes I get these nasty suicidal thoughts until someone changes it or selective hearing kicks in.

Weird things about this poll so far:
De La Soul - a band that has songs about happy woodland animals and daisies - having less votes than the Beatles, who wrote “Yesterday”, “Helter Skelter” and a whole bunch of other songs that are far from glad.
The Flaming Lips - who have multiple songs about EVERYONE DYING - having more votes than Art Brut.
The Beach Boys vs. AFI matchups having around five hundred more votes than every other matchup (seven hundred more than most).

A further weird thing…AFI has pretty much exactly as many votes as the number of extra votes in their matchup, thus proving my hypothesis that the mAFIa will go to a website to only vote for AFI in an AFI matchup no matter what the question is.
As far as Art Brut goes, they have their share of sad songs about impotence and ex-girlfriends. They went in the poll because those sad songs invariably make people laugh, smile, and sing along, particularly at shows. That’s a special superpower that earns them at least the right to lose against the Lips.

I voted for the Lips because their songs may have themes of death and destruction, but:
A. They tend to end inspirationally
B. The Flaming Lips concert I was at 2 weeks ago was the most fun time I’ve had in a while (beside skinnydipping while on shrooms at a drum circle this past sunday)

This is hilarious. While I am aware that there are no doubt some AFI fans who would do as suggested on here, I am not one of them. I actually laughed at the match up and voted for the Beach Boys. I’m sure you realize that my voting has no bearing or indication of where my own personal preference lies. I do not claim to know many Beach Boys songs, but I’m going on average here, and in general AFI music is not happy. Poetic, energetic, enthralling, sure. But lyrically, and even in sound, very few AFI songs are upbeat.
