Dream Band: Drummers, Round 1
Thanks for being patient, everyone, but now it’s time to move the arguments to the world of drummers and bassists. Who’s gonna be twirling the sticks for the Dream Band?
Remember two things:
1) You don’t necessarily have to pick the more technically skilled or more revered performer, the only question is, “who would you like to have as the drummer in your band?
2) We’re picking a drummer now, so the Dream Band is probably going to have to rehearse at this person’s house. Have at it.
Pick a drummer: Neil Peart or Carl Palmer?
Pick a drummer: Mick Fleetwood or Mitch Mitchell?
Pick a drummer: Carter Beauford or Danny Carey?
Pick a drummer: Bill Bruford or Chris Frantz?
Pick a drummer: Keith Moon or Charlie Watts?
Pick a drummer: Max Weinberg or Larry Mullen Jr?
Pick a drummer: Ginger Baker or Steve Smith?
Pick a drummer: Jimmy Chamberlain or Terry Bozzio?
Pick a drummer: John Bonham or Alex Van Halen?
Pick a drummer: Ian Paice or Dave Lombardo?
Pick a drummer: Lars Ulrich or Chris Pennie?
Pick a drummer: Ringo Starr or Phil Collins?
Pick a drummer: Dave Grohl or Steve Gadd?
Pick a drummer: Travis Barker or Brad Wilk?
Pick a drummer: Stewart Copeland or Zak Starkey?
Pick a drummer: Clyde Stubblefield or Animal?

Moon vs. Watts in the first round is as absurd as having the Who face the Stones in the first round of Band Madness. This could easily be a final two matchup. Watts is the most underrated drummer of all time.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s been covered somewhere before, but is this a random generated pairing or is there some attempt at seeding in this?

wow Danny Carey vs. Carter Beauford first round is tough. I think non drummers should not be able to vote bc I think alot of the better drummers are going to get shafted.

no budgie from siouxsie & the banshees? his playing has always been interesting and innovative and not just your typical thrashing away in 4/4 time for three minutes. the creatures, anyone?

I love Animal. Thanks for including him.

The seeding for these rounds of 32 was really tough, as evidenced by some of the pretty brutal first round matchups; I made a minor effort to seperate the individuals who I felt would have the utmost public support, but in terms of full-on seeding, like we did with the main tournament, it simply wouldn’t work in a bracket this small and subjective.
Also, Chris Frantz went to my high school.

Ok, has anyone LISTENED to the drumming that Brad Wilk does in Audioslave? I practically feel as if I am listening to Meg White. At least she is TRYING to be simple (or more likely just cannot play). Seriously, I guarantee that the drum tabs for a good number of Audioslave songs are nearly identical, so I lost a lot of respect for him.

I think Carter Beauford should advance past Carey and Steve Gadd for sure should be beating Dave Grohl!

This is ridiculous!! I think Carter Beauford is sooo much better than Danny Carey.

Hirsby, are you joking? Have you ever watched Watts play? He’s boring as hell. HE even looks bored being there. At least Moon (RIP) put some enthusiasm into his pounding!

Hey Spoon, even Ringo admitted he wasn’t that good of a drummer. Go back and listen to some early Genesis. While Collins pretty much pussed out when he went solo/mainstream, back in the early Genesis days, he was pretty damn good!

Agree with the seeding issue. No way should Alex V.H. and Bonham be going against each other already. (for the record, I voted Bonham)
And Dan, the main tourney had similar seeding issues, so I’ve always wondered was it a name out of the hat, thing or what? Looked all over the site to find any info about how you do it. How about sharing?

Once the seeds are completed, I use Random.org to determine which portion of the bracket the bands/artists fall into. The process is exhausting and complicated in the main tournament and took me weeks, but for these tournaments, I left it a little more random. Granted, Charlie Watts going down in the first round isn’t super fair, but I prefer it to more or less deciding who’s going to lose in round one by seeding them in detail, plus do we really need every tournament to have a final four made up of the members from the same handful of classic rock bands? In the end, I feel democracy wins out.
