Band Madness!

Mini Madness: Squarest Band
In honor of my parents’ recent visit to New York and a strange conversation with my mother concerning the Rolling Stones, I’ve been thinking about what I consider to be “parent” music, and not just Rolling Stones, Beatles, Elton John and whatever light folk or quirky side-thing (country, Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) parents just sort of quietly enjoy. I’m talking about absolutely, universally lame adult music that attaches plastic explosives to the bridges across the generation gap. I gotta ask, which is the most notorious “lame” band?
Which is the squarest band?

Air Supply immediately came to my mind as well.

I feel like no one really listens to Air Supply, though, whereas the rest of the bands on this list are definitely bands who I can hear parents / high schoolers just discovering music saying “oh, I like _______”

I just looked up the word “Square” in Roget’s thesaurus. This is what I found:
Main Entry: square
Part of Speech: adjective
Synonyms: boring, button-down, dated, Don Henley, stuffy, terrible, Glenn Frey, unimaginative, The Eagles
Antonyms: good, enjoyable

Rush
Styx
Weezer (lets face it, they look uncofortable as rock stars)
the Monkeys
it’s a thin line between square & nerd

I don’t understand how you could see Dave Matthews Band live and possibly say they’re square… And I find BNL really good too

I don’t really think that BNL are “square” either. I think “torture” is more apt.

I’d add the Carpenters to the list. And good call on Journey.
Weezer I’d challenge. They’re nerds, but not really square. Square in my mind is safe and toothless, something you’d hear over the loudspeaker’s in a Shell Station. Weezer’s a little uncomfortable and some of their stuff is along those lines (ahem, Island in the Sun) but they take a risk or two.

Hey, hey. I just saw Peter, Paul and Mary a few years back. Nothing square about them.

The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Chicago (early stuff is good) and Steely Dan lame? What the hell are you smoking?
Genesis are certainly not lame, especially their early stuff. Selling England By The Pound is one of the greatest prog rock albums ever. Rush are good, as well as Styx (again, earlier stuff is obviously the best). Foreigner are good, too.
You guys fail at musical taste.
