Tuesday Rivalry: Born in the U.S.A.
With only one American band making it into in the Elite Eight (who probably didn’t even belong there), let’s take some time to at least pat ourselves on the back for the (kind of) legendary bands that our great country has produced, even if we don’t really dust off their albums much these days.
Who is the quintessential "American Rock Band?"
1 May 2007 at 4:37 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Nickelback

1 May 2007 at 5:03 pm Eastern [ quote ]
haha…they didn’t even stay together that long–
1 May 2007 at 5:05 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Other: Bob Dylan and The Band
1 May 2007 at 5:07 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Crap, most of The Band are Canadians aren’t they?
Buddy Holly and the Crickets then.
1 May 2007 at 5:09 pm Eastern [ quote ]
ewww
i thought for the most part–nickelback was canadian…?

The Pussycat Dolls
1 May 2007 at 5:29 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Skynyrd, as much as I’d hate to admit it…maybe it’s just being from SC, though.
1 May 2007 at 5:33 pm Eastern [ quote ]
yes, nickelback is canadian.
i’m so proud.
1 May 2007 at 5:44 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Bob Dylan isn’t a “band.” Neither is The Band.
1 May 2007 at 5:47 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Bob Dylan isn’t a “band.” Neither is The Band.
The Band is certainly a band. If you are going to make ridiculous statements saying they are not, please back them up in some way.
Bob Dylan is just as much a band as David Bowie is.
1 May 2007 at 5:49 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Are you sure The Band is a band? I’m pretty sure it’s a guy’s name, like Jethro Tull.
1 May 2007 at 6:05 pm Eastern [ quote ]
No, I mean the other The Band, not this guy: http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0479113/Ss/0479113/iid_1016529.jpg.html?path=gallery&path_key=0479113
And hasn’t Ian Anderson officially changed his name yet?
1 May 2007 at 6:11 pm Eastern [ quote ]
And what would we do without the Seed Drill anyway?
1 May 2007 at 6:17 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I have to agree with Dogwallow-
Even though I can’t stand Skynyrd,
I automatically thought of them as soon as I read the question…
How sad is that?
1 May 2007 at 6:55 pm Eastern [ quote ]
in all seriousness, the ramones or velvet underground
1 May 2007 at 7:06 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I voted for the Allmans. And probably would have no matter who else was added to the list. However, I would think that the following deserved a chance for consideration:
Bruce Stringsteen & the E Street Band
The Ramones
The Eagles
dare I say it…. Bon Jovi
and if you want to cut into the Deads votes, how about Phish?
Happy to see that Boston’s answer to the Rolling Stones is doing so well?
1 May 2007 at 7:16 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I am not a big fan but definitely the Ramones. Don’t think they would win but also the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be a good option. And what about a band like Pearl Jam?
1 May 2007 at 7:27 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
1 May 2007 at 8:21 pm Eastern [ quote ]
BRUUUCE
1 May 2007 at 10:49 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Yep. I actually can tolerate very little of their music, but as soon as I read the question, I was surprised they were not listed. It was my first thought, and I knew someone else would mention them here for sure.
2 May 2007 at 12:39 am Eastern [ quote ]
This may come under fire, but my vote goes to the one and only Pearl Jam.
To me, Pearl Jam sounds like a rock band should…and, well, they are American, so there we go
But, in all honesty, if I had to choose one American band who really sound like a genuine American rock and roll band, they are it for me.
2 May 2007 at 1:39 am Eastern [ quote ]
Butthole Surfers. Jimi Hendrix Experience (even though they couldn’t even get play in America originally). For some reason the Violent Femmes come to mind too.
God, I’m going to keep going. Tom Waits (not a band but oh well, I don’t like rules, that’s why I’m not picking just one artist). I can definately see The Boss getting my vote. The Hold Steady’s lyrics have a clear grasp on American Youth (as did The Boss’s and the Violent Femmes).
Gang of Four. Haha. (”Cheeseburger” could have easily been written by some pissed off teenage Americans.. as well as a lot of their other songs).
2 May 2007 at 7:23 am Eastern [ quote ]
I hate myself for suggesting it
The Eagles???
2 May 2007 at 8:21 am Eastern [ quote ]
maybe Skynyrd is more the quintessential Southern Rock band instead, since I doubt there’s as many folks outside the SE that readily identify with them…though I kind of put the Allman Bros. in the same category…
2 May 2007 at 9:28 am Eastern [ quote ]
I am not sure what you are saying concerning the Southeast thing? Especially when you mention the Allmans. I voted for the Allmans and I live in the Northeast. And remember the Allmans roll into NYC every spring for their ‘Annual Run’ at the Beacon. I go to a show ever year and most if not all the people are from the area.

I guess I was thinking that certain bands might be more popular in certain regions, with Skynyrd being the best example I can think of. I don’t know too many people not from the South who are big Allman Brothers fans, but that’s probably more due to me being in the South anyway.
I guess I was saying that Skynyrd is probably more Southern first, then American. Allman Brothers are maybe American first, then Southern. They’re also better.
I just meant that given the style of music, there’s probably more Allman Brothers fans concentrated in the South than elsewhere.
Still not sure how clear that was…
2 May 2007 at 10:10 am Eastern [ quote ]
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Although Skynyrd popped into my mind immediately, too.
And I can see the case for Springsteen.
2 May 2007 at 11:07 am Eastern [ quote ]
U2

Radio Tarifa
2 May 2007 at 11:51 am Eastern [ quote ]
Interesting that Aerosmith has almost twice as many votes as The Doors, and yet, The Doors are still in the actual tournament.
2 May 2007 at 11:58 am Eastern [ quote ]
I am finding that interesting as well. I guess seeding is very critical in these tournaments.
Somehow Boston’s answer to the Rolling Stones is running away with this one.
2 May 2007 at 12:04 pm Eastern [ quote ]
haha…they didn’t even stay together that long–

so? they embody and personify everything American in my eyes.
that’s all that matters then…

that you enjoy creed.
2 May 2007 at 1:40 pm Eastern [ quote ]
i enjoy all music…i’m sick of talking about creed–they’re ok…nothing more.
2 May 2007 at 2:00 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Bruce Springsteen. He’s so American that his songs are used on the campaign trail for EVERY CANDIDATE EVER.
2 May 2007 at 4:18 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I stand by my choices but add Grinderman to that list. (I wonder if you guys are thinking that I turn tricks for NIck Cave, yet)
2 May 2007 at 6:04 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Can I just say that I think the Doors are justified in being in the final 8. I voted for Pink Floyd this round, but I really can’t understand why everyone here seems to just take as a given that the Doors are an inferior band. They’re certainly better than Queen.
2 May 2007 at 6:19 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I’d say Bruce and the E Street Band or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are about as American as it gets.
Nickelback are Canadian. Fucking Canada. You’ve now used up all the good will you gained from Neil Young. You’ve still got Joni Mitchell though.
*heards Bryan Adams record*
Well, now that’s gone too. lol
Creed personifies everything that’s American to you? Come on Hayley, you don’t hate America THAT much… 10 years from now someone will say “Creed” and everyone will say “who?”. And I doubt it will take 10.
2 May 2007 at 6:22 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I voted for Other because I think Springsteen or Petty’s bands are more American than the other bands listed, but there has to be an argument made for Aerosmith because America has pretty much sucked since 2001 as well…
2 May 2007 at 6:23 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Spaceman: Queen and the Doors are about even in my opinion, but I don’t think either is anywhere near the top 8. It doesn’t look like either will survive the round though.
2 May 2007 at 6:44 pm Eastern [ quote ]
haha
3 May 2007 at 7:43 am Eastern [ quote ]
I agree, whole-heartedly. I voted for the Doors this round, despite knowing they had no shot at beating Floyd. And I’ve always despised Queen. There’s nothing wrong with them, I suppose, I’ve just never enjoyed their music at all.
8 May 2007 at 2:52 pm Eastern [ quote ]
You know, I vote for Bon Jovi as well. God help me.
As for those voting for Nickelback, good luck and God speed.
17 May 2007 at 4:43 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes
24 May 2007 at 9:42 pm Eastern [ quote ]
No Bruce and the E Street Band? Shock…
well, I would probably go with U2. definitely. Nickelback? definitely…not. sorry.=[
29 May 2007 at 5:17 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I can’t believe nobody mentioned Guns N’ Roses. For me they totally are the quintessential american rock band.. nobody comes close. except for aerosmith of the 70’s which take a close second. those are the only 2 american rock bands that can be mentioned with british greats like the beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, zeppelin, the who, and queen.
haha and I agree with everybody bashing nickelback they aren’t even rock they are formulaic pop music disguised as rock. what a horrid band.
