Band Madness!
Off the Record: Third Place?
This matchup doesn’t actually count - it is not officially sanctioned by the Boxing Association of America, or the Despair Faction of America, or Guinness - but, just for fantasy’s sake, let’s find out what happens when we place our two Final Four runners-up into a jar and shake it up to make them fight.
This is David Bowie versus Pink Floyd, people. It’s Moonage Daydream versus Dark Side of the Moon. Diamond Dogs versus regular Dogs. Glam Rock versus Slam Rock.
Pink Floyd has actually never been called “Slam Rock,” nor is “Slam Rock” an actual thing that exists or means anything. I just wanted a catchy boxing-promoter kind of lead-in, but I blew it, and now I’m just gonna pout while you vote on this fake matchup and leave some fake comments. Or maybe real ones. I don’t know, I’m pouting real hard.

David Bowie really overreached himself this year.

Ya know, I don’t know if this is even going to be close. There really seems to be a huge fan base for Bowie on this site. I think Floyd is screwed, but I hope my vote for Floyd helps out.

Zach, can you explain why you think that? I honestly found that comment baffling.

David Bowie does not have the commercial success or the total name reconigtion of anyone else in the Sweet 16 but AFI and Queen. He has about three songs that get regular radio-play, fewer than popular tournament non-factors like Rush and ELO, fewer than unpopular tournament whipping boy Bad Company.
I recognize that Bowie is a good artist, but he is only final four material in music-geek world.

well this is the music geek world, Bowie rocks and he definitely deserves to be in the final four, my vote goes to him for third place because i feel he did more to change and influence rock then Pink floyd ever did, and Bowie has never become extremely overrated for it(like Pink Floyd)

Bowie is a cut rate Andy Warhol. His music is fine but he is known to the world at large for bad roles in bad movies.
I have no problem if people like him, but he is not a Great the way most others in the final 8 are.

Only known the world over for bad roles in bad movies?
Maybe you need to see someone about getting the wax removed from your ears. I would gladly select Bowie’s catalogue over Floyd’s any day of the week. And Bowie has actually put out meaningful, good music in the last few years. Bowie being in the Final 8 was no reach.

How can anyone at this point say that a band is ‘overrated’? They obviously made it here on a reputation of being good. If you are going by records sales and noteable songs Floyd has 2 records in the top 25 best selling of all time. The only other bands that can say that they have 2 or more best sellers on the top 25 are Led Zeppelin (2), The Beatles (3), and The Eagles (3). Obviously Floyd was inspirational or they never would have sold so many albums of The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon. Bowie doesn’t even fall in the top 50 according to the RIAA.
Yeah, Bowie had some good songs, but I never hear them played on the radio anymore. A Pink Floyd song can be heard on just about any rock station, at any time. “Time”, “Money”, “Us and Them”, “Comfortably Numb”, “The Wall”, the entire Wish You Were Here album…Hell I hear things from The Division Bell and Meddle on the radio.
Anyway, in the end its all about personal preference. And we all should stop trying to bash each of the artists’ accomplishments and what they have done for the music community; because they both have done great things.

Thanks for the backup Tony. I’m not sure invoking the success of The Eagles really helps, but at least it shows that Bowie is not a commercial success on the level of other major entries.
On a side note, Space Oddity still gets radio play.
