Dream Band: Frontmen, Round 1
Ability? Image? Voice? Style? Sense of humor? What are we going to value the most when choosing the lead singer of our Dream Band?
Good luck whittling down this incredibly stacked list of lead singers; voting goes through midnight Wednesday, at which point, we’ll start to have some sort of vague direction for what this band’s going to look like, be it rock or metal or punk or some awesome combination of all of those, living and dead. Or maybe we can just elect Jeff Mangum and send the Dream Band into inexplicable estrangement

Go Bruce Dichinson…I really don’t see how anyone on this list can keep him from the final 4 in vocals…
4 June 2007 at 12:53 pm Eastern [ quote ]
The Morrison/Harry question was f*cking hard. David Bowie/Meat Loaf? Not so much.
4 June 2007 at 1:15 pm Eastern [ quote ]
It basically goes like this for me:
1. David Byrne
2. Prince
Everyone else.
4 June 2007 at 1:20 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Who’s that DAB23 guy? Doesn’t he look a little bit like Bruce Dickinson if he wore a fake mustache?
4 June 2007 at 2:42 pm Eastern [ quote ]
OK…you figured me out…although Dickinson doesn’t have a stache.
4 June 2007 at 3:35 pm Eastern [ quote ]
[The Morrison/Harry question was f*cking hard.]
Yeah it was.
4 June 2007 at 4:24 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Was this bracket formed by seeding, or random draw? Since there a lot of really tough matchups.
Vedder vs. Strummer in the FIRST ROUND? Jeez. I took Eddie, but as much as I love Pearl Jam, this was a head-scratcher.
I voted for Debbie Harry. I thought that match would be closer than it is, but the highly secretive order of the Doors Mafia seem to be at it again.
Prince is an obvious pick over Wayne Coyne, but I’m sad to see Wayne go in the first round. I would’ve picked over half the other people on the list.
Bon Scott, but no Brian Johnson?
I was one of the few who voted Bon Jovi over Cobain and Meat Loaf over Bowie. I can’t fault the Meat for nearly killing himself during each and every show in his prime. I wouldn’t vote Cobain best of anything unless the next contest is drugged-up, overrated hack Madness.
Morrissey is losing to Billie Joe? Come on, people.
4 June 2007 at 5:14 pm Eastern [ quote ]
*Did I miss Patti Smith in here somewhere
I think Kurt Cobain is cool and all, but I wouldn’t put him over Bon Jovi either.
4 June 2007 at 5:26 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Here we go again!!! LMAO!!
4 June 2007 at 5:29 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Hmm…hundred more votes in the AFI matchup. Cool.
4 June 2007 at 5:34 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Billie Joe may have helped me discover punk rock and everything but he can’t beat Morrissey.
4 June 2007 at 5:39 pm Eastern [ quote ]
haha, get ready for the buzznet crowd, cuz once they find out this board will be flooded =P
4 June 2007 at 5:50 pm Eastern [ quote ]
kurt cobain!!!!!!!
billy joe!!!!!!!
davey!!!!!!!
bon scott!!!!!!!
but ther wer sum hard 1z tho
4 June 2007 at 6:22 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Jesus Christ, learn to spell for the love of god…
I’m rooting for the women-folk. Let’s go Janis, Debbie and Davey!
4 June 2007 at 6:26 pm Eastern [ quote ]
haha..nice one!
I quote AFI’s guitarist Jade Puget, “We couldn’t get Winona Ryder in time to do the ‘My life is a big, dark, room’ bit so we said ’screw, we’ll get get our own dark-haired little girl and called in Davey.”
4 June 2007 at 7:36 pm Eastern [ quote ]
fantastic. This list makes Daverlly happy.
Very happy.
4 June 2007 at 7:48 pm Eastern [ quote ]
GO DAVEY!!
Good voice, good style, good attitude. Looks like a winner to me!
5 June 2007 at 12:45 am Eastern [ quote ]
can we switch out davey for gerard?
5 June 2007 at 1:14 am Eastern [ quote ]
MCR fans didn’t flood the gates this year. Davey was a bone thrown to us. Gerard Way’s random appearance would make no sense.
5 June 2007 at 10:38 am Eastern [ quote ]
who’s us?
5 June 2007 at 11:13 am Eastern [ quote ]
Hey, if you were going to be a famous frontman, what would you change your name to?
5 June 2007 at 12:33 pm Eastern [ quote ]
AFI fans.
5 June 2007 at 1:53 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Watch out AFI fans. One word to the NIN hotline and Trent will win this hands down. Don’t believe me? They are known for breaking polls.
I voted TR of course. The toughest for me was David Byrne/Scott Weiland. I like both and they have such different styles…but talking heads win for me.
5 June 2007 at 2:20 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Still don’t see how anyone can keep Dickinson from the finals…
5 June 2007 at 4:57 pm Eastern [ quote ]
GO DAVEY!!!!!!!!!!!
5 June 2007 at 7:37 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Oh, now that would be priceless. Reznor vs. Havok….
No, don’t worry, I think all of us AFI fans are aware of the fact that NIN won the first Bandmadness competition for a reason. Plus, most of us are probably voting for Trent anyway.
I agree with whoever said Strummer vs. Vedder in Round 1…that was a bit painful.
6 June 2007 at 4:28 am Eastern [ quote ]

Uh….I don’t think so. I’ll vote for Trent until he’s up against DXH, after that forget it.
6 June 2007 at 9:47 am Eastern [ quote ]
There are certianly some notable misses on this list. Most of them I was able to explain away for any number of reasons… too much solo, not established enough, etc… However, no matter how I shake it there is one glaring absence on this list that IMO could beat out at least two thirds of the others, with one sideburn tied behind his back. The man who pretty much redefined what a frontman could do, a guy who was always pushing the boundaries of what was allowed on stage, the man who paved the way for almost every frontman on this list, the “King” of frontmen if you will… Mr. Elvis Presley. Where is he? Surely he crushes Davey Havok, and possibly eeks out a win on Zack Morris.
6 June 2007 at 11:14 am Eastern [ quote ]
Good point erik. Just another show of the moderators’ indy-rock bias.
6 June 2007 at 12:05 pm Eastern [ quote ]
So, when does this round close so that we can vote for Davey again?
6 June 2007 at 12:08 pm Eastern [ quote ]
The absence of Elvis, while certainly debate-worthy, was mostly because we only selected frontmen from bands for the Dream Band, not just any musical personality. It’s the same reason why we left off people like Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Madonna, though we did include the likes of Prince, Janis Joplin, and James Brown, because they more or less just fronted a band even though they’re mostly monikered as their own name. Is this a slight to Elvis? Sure hope it doesn’t seem like that.
6 June 2007 at 1:08 pm Eastern [ quote ]
That’s sort of what i figured, just still not sure he doesn’t get in anyway based on his importance to the position. Anyway, your ruling is good and fair, and btw, I don’t think anything would/could be considered (a) slight to Elvis in his later years.
6 June 2007 at 1:10 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I thought he just copied what all the black people were already doing.
6 June 2007 at 4:28 pm Eastern [ quote ]
In sound, yes. On stage, no.
6 June 2007 at 8:09 pm Eastern [ quote ]
screw elvis..what about dickinson
6 June 2007 at 10:07 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Poor poor Bryan Ferry.
Screw Elvis….where’s Mike Patton?
I am truly stunned by some the current leaders.
Strummer over Vedder?
Curtis over Joplin?
Lydon over Perry?
De La Rocha over Gahan?
As much as I am a fan of all of the guys who are winning, I just don’t see how they are beating who they are beating.
The Morrissey/Billie Joe match is too close. Morrissey should have owned that from the start.
I believe that Cobain, Mangum, and Reznor should all be in the songwriter category. I’m a Spiral member and I voted for Cornell. He’s just a btter singer. Trent’s a songwriter.
And Dickinson definitely got stiffed!

Ok.. so the final’s gonna be Havok vs. Reznor.. That’ll be tragic!
7 June 2007 at 4:08 pm Eastern [ quote ]
“Poor poor Bryan Ferry.”
Agreed, geishagrrl. I also say poor, poor Robert Pollard. Pollard vs. Smith is actually a very interesting, although somewhat difficult, matchup. Yorke vs. Black was also hard for me, as well as a few others, such as Mercury vs. Dio, which is a brilliant matchup in my opinion. And I must say that it hurts to see Henry Rollins lose to Axl Rose. Who the hell wants to put up with Axl’s antics?

You do realize that AFI have covered a NIN song before, right?
9 June 2007 at 10:39 am Eastern [ quote ]
AND that trent was rocking the house long before davey began applying fake eyelashes?
9 June 2007 at 11:03 am Eastern [ quote ]
I don’t think that trent ever “rocked the house” & Atleast in the beginning of AFI davey didn’t look like V from V for vendetta. (check out the perfect drug)

since none of the links work i suggest that you check them next time!
Trust me their are some ugly pictures of davey but atleast davey isnt vain enough that every time AFI goes out touring/recording they need new members or a new band. Trent makes babies die………………….
9 June 2007 at 6:50 pm Eastern [ quote ]
how would touring with different people make you vain?
9 June 2007 at 8:14 pm Eastern [ quote ]
because davey can keep people around when trent just forces everone around him to love how “great” he is. Trent can’t keep anyone around…
9 June 2007 at 9:13 pm Eastern [ quote ]
im sorry i really do like nin
9 June 2007 at 9:13 pm Eastern [ quote ]
but u can still die and get eaten by babies
9 June 2007 at 9:37 pm Eastern [ quote ]
I doubt it would end with Trent vs. Davey, but there is some overlap between those fanbases. I’m not sure who I would vote for.
Robert Plant vs. Eddie Argos seems a little cruel :p
Despite my unquestioned vote for Bowie, I feel like Meatloaf should have lasted longer.
The Billy Joe vs. Morrissey closeness isn’t particularly surprising, but isn’t nice either. Oh well… damn kids today.
10 June 2007 at 2:54 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Looks like my comment got misconstrued (a few times) so I’ll clarify.
What I meant is that since the fanbases overlap, I know a lot of AFI fans that would vote for Trent UP UNTIL he’s against Davey. I doubt that’ll happen, and if it does, that the DF would win. As good as the Despair Faction is, it’s fact that we’re outnumbered by the Spirallers. That’s nothing against the DF or AFI…nor would it ever be, considering that they’re one of my all-time favorites.
Whether NIN is good or not is subject to opinion, so I’m not even going to go into that. I happen to think Trent’s pretty brilliant…and as far as I know, he’s never killed any babies.
11 June 2007 at 4:24 pm Eastern [ quote ]
He may not kill babies, but I heard a rumour he kicks puppies.
I think we agree MXC. I’m on a lot of NIN boards along with the AFI OMB and the DF just doesn’t have comparable numbers.
12 June 2007 at 11:09 am Eastern [ quote ]
Most underrated frontman/vocalist = Chris Cornell.
He’d be the first piece to my “Dream” band.
12 June 2007 at 3:47 pm Eastern [ quote ]
Never doubt the power of the NINternet. AFI thinks they have a solid win in their hands, especially if it came to TR v. DH. All I’m saying is no such luck. NIN fans are dedicated. They will do whatever it takes to put NIN on top.
Also, touring with a new backing band is no big deal. Keeps things fresh. Besides, didn’t Davey date one of his band members? No wonder he keeps them around. Gotta give luv to the butt buddies.
