These are actually starting to get hard for me. Finally some difficult choices.
2 April 2007 at 12:23 am Eastern
i know. i actually had to think this time around. this is the part i was getting excited for.
and who the hell is voting for green day.
2 April 2007 at 12:52 am Eastern
I agree. I felt some pain in making a few of these decisions.
2 April 2007 at 12:53 am Eastern
what were some hard ones for you?
2 April 2007 at 12:56 am Eastern
I felt dirty no matter which way I voted in the Peter Gabriel vs Kinks.
At least I didn’t have to add the guilt of voting for Journey this round.
2 April 2007 at 12:57 am Eastern
aww geez…. why did Tool have to meet up with such a heavy hitter in Round 3? oh well, still a few favs in the mix.
2 April 2007 at 12:57 am Eastern
Oh, and Velvet Underground against Elvis Costello - on that one I just closed my eyes and clicked.
2 April 2007 at 12:59 am Eastern
ha. who did you end up with?
2 April 2007 at 1:04 am Eastern
I believe Costello. It was hard to tell with the breaking out in a cold sweat and all. This round is definitely a challenge.
2 April 2007 at 1:14 am Eastern
Is it just coincidence, or just bad charma, that Michael Jackson went up against “Get Up Kids” last round, and now “Outkast”… too bad “Little Feat” is out, and the “Beach Boys” are in another bracket
2 April 2007 at 1:15 am Eastern
good call
are you another winnipegger?
2 April 2007 at 1:18 am Eastern
Now things are heating up:
Radiohead over SOAD - Moderately difficult decision
The Kinks over Peter Gabriel - Really easy decision
Queen over The Jackson Five - Ridiculously easy decision
AC/DC over The Grateful Dead - Based entirely on personal preference as I respect both equally, but would much rather listen to AC/DC.
Hendrix over Santana - While both bands have great guitarists, the Experience also has great songs.
Billy Joel over Ozzy Osbourne - Extremely difficult decision
Stevie Wonder over Tom Waits - Another very tough call, but I rarely have to struggle through Stevie’s music the way I have to with some of Tom’s.
Pixies over George Harrison - Love the Pixies, don’t really listen to a lot of Harrison.
Tool over David Bowie - Personal preference by a sliver. Way too soon for this match in my opinion, but about right for overall opinion.
Bob Marley over Jerry Lee Lewis - Really easy call.
Green Day over The Shins - Tough call, seeing as how the Shins changed my life, but the Shins haven’t surpassed Green Day in my book. Not yet, anyway.
Smashing Pumpkins over Sonic Youth - The closest call of the day.
The Strokes over Depeche Mode - Will the Depeche Mode cavalry need to be called in or are the Strokes not competition enough to make it close? Stay tuned.
Janis Joplin over Paul Simon - Not passionate about either, but they’re neck and neck with each other.
Coldplay over The Beastie Boys - What will it say about the demoagraphics on this site if The Beastie Boys are the last hip hop group standing? To be fair, though, you can’t get much whiter than Coldplay… lol
Skynyrd over The Smiths - Tough call.
2 April 2007 at 1:18 am Eastern
sure am
2 April 2007 at 1:22 am Eastern
“The Strokes over Depeche Mode - Will the Depeche Mode cavalry need to be called in or are the Strokes not competition enough to make it close? Stay tuned.”
uhhh, no. because the webmaster of the forum closed down my thread calling it spam. So i shared my views. and I am sure I will be banned. c’est la vie.
as if skynyrd/smiths is tough darren, come on. do not tell me you voted for skynyrd.
2 April 2007 at 1:27 am Eastern
This time I decided not to vote in the heats “band I hate vs. band whose stuff I didn’t heard”
Radiohead - they will be our possible rivals in 1/8 but come on… and I even like SoaD.
Peter Gabriel - III and Security were excellent, Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur too but I preferr prog of Gabriel solo to 60’s british invasion of Kinks, though I like both
Queen - I like Queen
Ozzy Osbourne - haven’t heard any album by Ozzy but I like Black Sabbath - here you are
Stevie Wonder - I’m not the greatest fan of 70’s soul but I hate hate hate hate Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs and especially Bone Machine
George Harrisson - here I forgot about my rule and voted in an anti-indie way though I haven’t heard anything by Harrisson. Pixies are passable but not great Many bands of the same time were better.
David Bowie - and I ‘m not to the slightest extent a fan of Bowie: he wasn’t very talented, he was an imitator and he has made way too muich albums. The thing he was able to do was to make some very good records.Hunky Dory, Ziggy and Heroes were excellent. Aladdin Sane good (maybe), the rest was full of filler - some good tracks on Low/Scary Monsters.
Still it outweighs Undertow/Aenima.
Green Day - Wincing The Night Away is lame, American Idiot must have been a definitive pop-punk opera, I liked the singles off it, haven’t heard an album though, still Boulevard Of Broken Dreams better than any plain The Shins song.
Sonic Youth. Smashing Pumpkins were not so good as I used to think. Evol/Sister/Murray Street win.
DEPECHE MODE
Janis Joplin (hated Graceland, quite liked Pearl)
Beastie Boys - come on…
The Smiths - not a fan of them but Queen Is Dead was very good.
Beatles -not a fan of this band at all, prefer Lennon solo but still…
Outkast - I adore Southernplayalistcadillacmusic and Aquemini+Stankonia was very good too. Thriller was lame and dated and Bad a bit better -due to the fact it was released 5 years later - still full of filler.
RUN-DMC s/t, King Of Rock, Raising Hell outweigh the brilliant Californication.
The Cure
Nirvana - 1993, 1994.
Beach Boys - not a fan of them but they win
Elvis Costello - I do not like VU
John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band and Imagine were amazing both.
Alice In Chains - Dirt, Jar Of Flies and Sap were good to acceptable.

Beatles over Billy Idol - Billy Idol made the third round? Really?
Joy Division over Journey - And Journey, too? Don’t we wish we lived in a world where Steve Perry died after his second album and Ian Curtis lived to this day?
Outkast over Michael Jackson - Pretty easy decision.
RHCP over Run DMC - Tough call.
Mellencamp over The Cure - I think I hear alarms going off. lol
Van Morrison over Elvis Presley - Elvis was a hero to most…
Pearl Jam over The Temptations - My second favorite band moves on.
The Clash over STP - I like STP, but I love The Clash.
Nivana over Otis Redding - Fairly easy decision.
Talking Heads over Neil Diamond - One of the easiest decisions of the round. I mean seriously? Neil fucking Diamond?
The Beach Boys over Dr. Dre - Because I’m choosing to only consider Dre’s own music rather than the music he made as a producer or with N.W.A.
Simon and Garfunkel over Def Leppard - You know… there were a lot of hard 2nd round matches in the second half of last week and it seems like a lot of shitty bands squeaked through to the first half of this round… Neither of these bands is stellar, but come on, Def Leppard?
Rolling Stones over James Taylor - This might be the most lopsided match in Band Madness history. 55-2 the last time I checked.
Elvis Costello over Velvet Underground - One of the toughest matches thusfar.
Lennon over Arcade Fire - The Arcade Fire isn’t there yet.
Alice In Chains over Allman Brothers - Personal preference and most likely a direct influence of growing up at the height of grunge.
2 April 2007 at 1:35 am Eastern
Radiohead - they will be our possible rivals in 1/8 but come on… and I even like SoaD.

I voted for Green Day, Hayley. We’ll see if the Shins hold up when they get too popular and the backlash comes for them the same way it did for Green Day.
Ames - I agree. It just feels right to vote against Journey.
Tool doesn’t seem particularly popular with the folks behind this tournament. Then again, they did lose in the first round last year to Jethro Tull…
Costello vs. Velvets was probably the toughest of the day.
Hayley: Just because that site turned you down doesn’t mean that some Depeche Mode fan won’t find some other site to do their dirty work. Time will tell if history will repeat itself.
Yeah, I picked Skynyrd over The Smiths. It was a close call, but I prefer Skynyrd’s southern rock to The Smith’s mopey proto-emo by a little.
Laibach - What happens if it’s “band that you hate” vs. “band that you hate”? It’s gotta come up frequently, considering how many bands you hate.
2 April 2007 at 1:42 am Eastern
Elvis Costello wins vs. VU in any case
2 April 2007 at 1:46 am Eastern
By the way, how did Bracket B end up with the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Clash, Nirvana and Pearl Jam all crammed into one bracket?
Confess, you’re trying to give me an aneurysm, aren’t you.
2 April 2007 at 1:48 am Eastern
Green Days clearly beats The Shins - Wincing The Night Away was lame while American Idiot did have some excellent singles in iyts genre - haven’t heard an album.
2 April 2007 at 1:53 am Eastern
In this round I try to abstain from voting. Sometimes I see which of them is more indie.
I hate Talking Heads - every song by them and I haven’t heard anything by their rival - null vote.
I guess dEUS and Can weren’t in? At least Ween were.
2 April 2007 at 1:57 am Eastern
I hate Joy Division and I haven’t heard anything by Journey -null vote.
Or I hate Paul Simon - Graceland is lame but I fairly like Janis Joplin - Pearl so I vote for her reluctantly.
2 April 2007 at 1:58 am Eastern
You’ve never heard any Neil Diamond? Lucky bastard.
Ween isn’t an indie band?
2 April 2007 at 2:01 am Eastern
darren, most last year came from the board.
hey laibach, ween is indie.
thought you hated indie.
2 April 2007 at 2:04 am Eastern
They are not as tuneless as Pavement, Wilco, Neutral Milk Hotel and Modest Mouse. Plus they signed to Electra with Pure Guava.
Plus they are not acclaimed in the indie world - indie kids mostly don’t like them (they prefer crappy Pavement and Modest Mouse). No-one imposes Pavement on you.
2 April 2007 at 2:06 am Eastern

INDIE IS NOT JUST WHAT INDIE KIDS LISTEN TO
indie kids are a fad, that will go away.
indie is exactly what the name implies. bands signed to indepedent labels.
comparing random indie bands that you know of proves nothing, least of all your music knowledge.
2 April 2007 at 2:06 am Eastern
I meant, no-one imposes Ween on you.
2 April 2007 at 2:07 am Eastern
laibach, where’s the fucking essay
2 April 2007 at 2:08 am Eastern
yeah, I had a WTF reaction to that also darren, with the exception of the Beatles(hate). I realize that they’ll probably take the whole thing barring another superfan stampede like last year, but there is nobody left in this thing that would make me consciously choose to vote in favor of the Beatles.
2 April 2007 at 2:14 am Eastern

Indie kids are the persons who like:
Velvet Underground
The Stooges
Talking Heads
Joy Division
1983-1988 R.E.M.
Husker Du
Replacements
Pixies
1988-199 Talk Talk
Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine
Slint
Pavement
Built To Spill
Neutral Milk Hotel
Boards Of Canada
Modest Mouse
Sigur Ros
Interpol
Arcade Fire
^^
This is a taste of a normal indie kid. Most of these bands are cheap-sounding crap.
Indie kids don’t like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Death and other good bands very much - they prefer crap like tuneless VU and The Stooges.
Moreover indie kids regard Depeche Mode as a gay insignificant 80’s synth-pop band and prefer Wilco and Modest Mouse to Depeche Mode
Ween aren’t popular among indie kids, they don’t enter with any of their album in top 100 Pitchfork 90’s albums+ they turned major quite promptly
2 April 2007 at 2:17 am Eastern
Beastie Boys must pwn Coldplay: Parachutes was excellent but not more
While Licensed To Ill, Boutique, Check Your head, Nasty - all were excellent.
Here common sense wins so far.
2 April 2007 at 2:23 am Eastern
If you’d listed Bloc Party and The Shins instead of Husker Du and Slint in that list I’d have to seriously rethink my path in life.
2 April 2007 at 2:23 am Eastern
“I meant, no-one imposes Ween on you.”
Not true. The CIA will impose Ween on you if they suspect you are a terrorist.
2 April 2007 at 2:27 am Eastern
Bloc Party aren’t Pitchfork approved and most indie kids don’t put them too high. The Shins are moderately liked but not up to the tycoons of the modern indie - Wilco, Interpol, Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire.
I hope you hate this list - personally I hate it and I think that Metallica and Led Zeppelin are better than any band on it.
Ween never appear on such lists - they are not so popular with the indies.
2 April 2007 at 2:30 am Eastern
Ween never appeared on any such lists because Ween aren’t all that good. Sorry, man, I’m right there with you on the Who, Led Zeppelin, Metallica (before Bob Rock) being better than most if not all of the list, but you won’t get far arguing the merits of Ween against much of anyone. It’s not that they’re bad, just so much as they’re nothing special. Kinda like Primus.
2 April 2007 at 2:39 am Eastern
Laibach: I hope you hate this list - personally I hate it and I think that Metallica and Led Zeppelin are better than any band on it.
I forgot that sarcasm is hard to read. I actually enjoy at least a song or two from all the bands on your list.
I also enjoy Metallica, the Who, and several others that are in that genre as well.
But I also keep Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 on rotation so what the hell do I know about music?
2 April 2007 at 2:40 am Eastern
Death are better than anything on this list too.
Ween?? I do not care about Mollusk and Chocolate And Cheese but Pura Guava is excellent. And Godweensatan - quite good.
Due to Pure Guava Ween can be regarded as an excellent band (never understood what everyone found in Mollusk)
Ween aren’t that good? Come on, Stooges, Talking Heads,Pavement, Wilco and Neutral Milk hotel are outrageously crapp but they are on those indie lists - a band needs to be BAD to appear there.
Primus are awesome to good. Primus are really brilliant at parts - some amazing songs. Frizzle Fry, Cheese, Pork Soda.
2 April 2007 at 2:43 am Eastern
PurE Guava certainly.
2 April 2007 at 2:46 am Eastern
PurE Guava certainly.
I cannot see how anyone can enjoy Neutral Milk Hotel, Pavement, Sigur Ros or Modest Mouse - they are crappy.
Futhermore, indie kids mostly hate Metallica and prefer shitty Pavement to it!
Something doesn’t fit.
Janet Jackson is absolute shit.
2 April 2007 at 2:55 am Eastern
Which was my point. My opinion is my own and while there are very few artists that have genius stamped on every single song I can still find something that I enjoy from each.
2 April 2007 at 3:50 am Eastern
Alright, am I going to have to sit the people who voted for smashing pumpkins down and play “Daydream Nation” so they will know what a terrible decision they have made?
Also, Metallica music for guys that would have been idiot fratboys but couldn’t get into college and manage to fuck up my order at carls jr. because their mullet keeps getting stuck in the drive-thru headset.
2 April 2007 at 5:50 am Eastern
Finally, Neil Diamond is no more… how did he even get this far?!?!
2 April 2007 at 6:40 am Eastern
Laibach got his heart broken by an indie chick once.
2 April 2007 at 8:37 am Eastern
OK, I know some of you like Outkast, but they are going against Michael here. Put aside your hatred for the gut and admit that he had put out some really good songs. Just think “Thriller vs. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”. And if you want to you can add the other albums.
2 April 2007 at 9:44 am Eastern
laibach, did someone hurt you as a young man? did your mum love you enough?
are you transferring self hatred onto hatred of indie kids because you’re unhappy with yourself?
2 April 2007 at 9:52 am Eastern
Hi!
2 April 2007 at 9:53 am Eastern
Depeche Mode win though I’m upset that DM have 260 votes while Radiohead and Queen - 300+. We will need more votes at the later stages.
2 April 2007 at 9:59 am Eastern
hey there. It has come to my attention that certain accounts have been banned from the site for basically no reason other than disagreeing with the musical taste of the mods. If so, this puts the entire credibility of this tourney into question doesnt it? If that is true that is complete garbage, but since I said anything in dissent, I will probably be banned too by the illuminati.
2 April 2007 at 10:02 am Eastern
Comment of the week goes to Darren:
“Laibach - What happens if it’s “band that you hate” vs. “band that you hate”? It’s gotta come up frequently, considering how many bands you hate.”
I just about had coffee coming out of my nose. lol
2 April 2007 at 10:04 am Eastern
you’re very ill informed.
the individual that people complained about being banned i believe has been unbanned.
so now it’s time to move on.
2 April 2007 at 10:04 am Eastern
its the same people voting over and over again–anybody who doesnt agree with hayley’s narrow world view is banned anyway, so there are probably like 10 people voting total these days. it would be better if they didnt get rid of potential vistors to this site and board, and maybe actually encouraged fans of music to come on the site and discuss their favorite bands.
2 April 2007 at 10:04 am Eastern
i should clarify that by ill informed i mean you really have no clue as to why any of the bannings take place and something tells me that if i explain things to you, you will still think it’s because of a bullshit reason like you posted.
2 April 2007 at 10:05 am Eastern
i have not banned anyone randall.
time to move on.
2 April 2007 at 10:06 am Eastern
I have heard that others are banned. If I am incorrect, I will gladly apologize, but a few people are saying they still cant get on–either way, what is with all of the banning, and then unbanning, and then warning, and then re-banning, etc. Its ridiculously stupid censorship and you know it.
2 April 2007 at 10:06 am Eastern
randall, who?
2 April 2007 at 10:06 am Eastern
Talking Heads are good. Stop Making Sense is incredible.
Load and ReLoad are two of the greatest crimes ever perpetrated on unsuspecting teenage ears. Sorry I wasn’t around for Master of Puppets, but the Metallica I heard sucked. The black album is overrated, Nothing Else Matters is a sob-story crap song not even worthy of Linkin Park, and Lars Urlrich is a douche. S & M?? Were they being ironic, or did they unintentionally make an album that soft and lame?
Robert Plant is annoying as hell. Stop singing duets with yourself and spend a little time writing decent lyrics. John Bonham is reason enough to listen to any band, but I often find myself wishing that they had just been a trio without a singer. And that they hadn’t written Ramble On.
If I like The Band does that make me an Indie Kid? Are they still in this thing?
Otis Redding beat Aretha to get here. Nirvana’s great, really great, but vote for Otis. Do it for your soul.
2 April 2007 at 10:08 am Eastern
I dont remember what names they used hayley–but why not just unban all ip’s already. if you didnt have anyone banned, why would you be asking me for names anyway?
2 April 2007 at 10:09 am Eastern
This round is much more difficult to decide.
2 April 2007 at 10:10 am Eastern
no, all ip’s will not be unbanned.
i am asking for names because i know who WAS banned, and if there are technical problems with the site, and people who were not are having difficulty, we need to know about it.
so either tell me, so i can look into it, or just get over it.
there was fine conversation til you arrived.
2 April 2007 at 10:11 am Eastern
I voted for green day over the shins because while i like both bands, the shins feel kind of wimpy to me sometimes. Not that this is bad, but I need my music to make me feel something, not just say, “hey that song is technically good.” Green Day has a lot of song writing talent, and they put everything into performing.
2 April 2007 at 10:12 am Eastern
You There is no one single monolithic aesthetic that governs the taste of the mods, Randall. We’re half a dozen different people who respectfully disagree with each other on music a lot.
The respectful part is the part that we dont have a problem enforcing by banning, but if what you say is true, we’d have to be banning each other all the time, which we don’t. Just don’t be abusive. And also, go out and throw some balls. This is your comeback year!
2 April 2007 at 10:12 am Eastern
” know who WAS banned,”
Whatever hayley, you just said there wasnt anyone banned.
you are constantly rude to me also, just because i am pointing out that people have been banned. Why not try to respect everyone instead of silencing them?
2 April 2007 at 10:14 am Eastern
where did i say that?
i’m rude to you because of your attitude. if you’re civil to me, i will be to you.
now please stop attempting to ruin this bracket too.
2 April 2007 at 10:15 am Eastern
I would love to get back in the game nate. thanks–
also–in reference to your comment, the banning have occured around a certain group of fans that hayley does not like. Nobody has been at all abusive. Everything has been in good fun, but hayley and chris have used their mod powers for true censorship of opinions, which I think everyone who surfs on this site woudl agree is contrary to everyone’s best interest. Its a music discussion blog. Why ban anyone? Nate–I appreciate your honest and not rude response.
2 April 2007 at 10:16 am Eastern
I have never been uncivil to you–I have just pointed out when you were being hypocritical hayley, and you cant take the mild criticism of the job you are doing. sorry.
I have never ever attempted to ruin anything on this site. i enjoy this site. I participate in it. Your attempt to characterize me as some sort of pariah is really betraying the true problem here.
2 April 2007 at 10:17 am Eastern
randall, seriously, enough. please.
if anyone has an issue with being banned, tell them to email chris at the addresses provided in the contact at the top of the page.
2 April 2007 at 10:17 am Eastern
how did i ruin anything hayley? by voting for the bands i like and commenting on the hypocrisy of the censorship you tried to engage in–how about you stop ruining the bracket?
2 April 2007 at 10:18 am Eastern
i am not unbanning anyone with chris’ sayso. nate can do what he likes, so can dan, etc.
but don’t take this out on me when i can’t help you.
2 April 2007 at 10:18 am Eastern
without rather, sorry.
2 April 2007 at 10:18 am Eastern
Why do you engage me if what i say doesnt strike a chord of truth hayley–I will try to stay on topic, but when you get argumentative with me, i will respond. Enjoy your day everyone.
2 April 2007 at 10:20 am Eastern
“i am not unbanning anyone with chris’ sayso.”
once again, I thought everyone was already unbanned?
“but don’t take this out on me when i can’t help you.”
i am not taking anything out on you–you are the one who is engaging me in this debate. I have nothing at all against you hayley. I dont know you.
2 April 2007 at 10:20 am Eastern
did you not start this argument?
2 April 2007 at 10:20 am Eastern
no. not everyone is unbanned.
you started this argument randall. not me.
2 April 2007 at 10:28 am Eastern
remember when we used to talk about music?
Otis over Nirvana. Try a Little Tenderness.
Ozzy over Bily Joel. Who actually likes Billy Joel? Am I the only person who thinks of him in the same group as Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles? God I hate the Eagles.
Run DMC over RHCP. Flea and Chad Smith do not a good band make. Kiedis can’t sing to save his life, and JF stopped writing decent guitar parts back in ‘91.
I heard the Rolling stones just ripped JT’s heart out and ate it. True story.
2 April 2007 at 10:29 am Eastern
sorry if i offended anyone–i will try to find the names of those who were banned because you offered to help hayley, and I appreciate that. Back to the music discussion.
2 April 2007 at 10:30 am Eastern
To answer your question, car insurance companies LOVE Billy Joel.
2 April 2007 at 10:31 am Eastern
“did you not start this argument?”
actually, i really wasnt trying to start any argument. just to make what i considered to be a valid point that anybody has the right to disagree or debate.
2 April 2007 at 10:33 am Eastern
randall, since we don’t have a pm function, im going to email the address you gave when you registered k.
we need to hash this out, away from here.
2 April 2007 at 10:33 am Eastern
hayley–ptfoolz wants to be unbanned.
2 April 2007 at 10:33 am Eastern
To answer your question, car insurance companies LOVE Billy Joel.
why is that?
2 April 2007 at 10:35 am Eastern
thats cool hayley—its no big deal to me. i respect what you guys are doing here–i understand why you dont want this shit on the board. ill stop from now on.
2 April 2007 at 10:37 am Eastern
To answer your question, car insurance companies LOVE Billy Joel.
why is that?
–
I was making a joke about how he’s always driving drunk and wrapping his car around telephone poles, thus driving up his insurance rates. You’re safer in Iraq than getting into a car with Billy Joel.
2 April 2007 at 10:38 am Eastern
I am happy to be unbanned. It was tough few days for me, as you can understand.
Anyway, I voted for Green Day over the Shins too. Primarily because I like Green Day better. There were definitely some tougher choices to be made this time around.
2 April 2007 at 10:41 am Eastern
zappafrank would like to be unbanned too. You should unban him. He’s a helluva guy.
2 April 2007 at 10:42 am Eastern
We’ve had a year of experience running this, and regretfuklly, it’s impossible for us to let things be completely free. For example, it’s prohibitively expensive to pay the bandwidth costs of people who post Oasis OasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasisOasis.
And it’s not in our best interest to suffer people who are so abusive that they scare the cool people away. And by cool I mean “just came by to talk about music.” Like you, you seem that you’re probably alright. Go ahead and express whatever the fuck opinion you want; as long as you’re ok with people feeling differently, then it’s our hope that you can come here and respect and you can expect to be respected too.
Freedom of speech also includes our freedom to have our own rules about our blog.
2 April 2007 at 10:52 am Eastern
cubicle, ha. just goes to show the extent of my billy joel knowledge.
2 April 2007 at 10:55 am Eastern
you didn’t miss much vnectar, comments were closed for the weekend.
gave everyone time to cool off, chill out and relax.
2 April 2007 at 11:07 am Eastern
what were some hard ones for you?
David Bowie v. Tool, Smashing Pumpkins v. Sonic Youth, Talking Heads v. Neil Diamond haha. I love me some Neil Diamond.
2 April 2007 at 11:16 am Eastern
They are not as tuneless as Pavement, Wilco, Neutral Milk Hotel and Modest Mouse. Plus they signed to Electra with Pure Guava.
Plus they are not acclaimed in the indie world - indie kids mostly don’t like them (they prefer crappy Pavement and Modest Mouse). No-one imposes Pavement on you.
Indie kids are the persons who like:
Velvet Underground
The Stooges
Talking Heads
Joy Division
1983-1988 R.E.M.
Husker Du
Replacements
Pixies
1988-199 Talk Talk
Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine
Slint
Pavement
Built To Spill
Neutral Milk Hotel
Boards Of Canada
Modest Mouse
Sigur Ros
Interpol
Arcade Fire
^^
This is a taste of a normal indie kid. Most of these bands are cheap-sounding crap.
Indie kids don’t like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Death and other good bands very much - they prefer crap like tuneless VU and The Stooges.
Moreover indie kids regard Depeche Mode as a gay insignificant 80’s synth-pop band and prefer Wilco and Modest Mouse to Depeche Mode
Ween aren’t popular among indie kids, they don’t enter with any of their album in top 100 Pitchfork 90’s albums+ they turned major quite promptly
I am about to blow your mind… I like EVERY band you listened (other than R.E.M. they are alright I guess) AND I like classic rock. Now what?
2 April 2007 at 11:20 am Eastern
Whitegillis, now that just isn’t possible.
clearly, according to laibach’s various pearls of wisdom you either like one or the other.
you just can’t like both “genres” (used loosely). it just doesn’t work that way.
2 April 2007 at 11:30 am Eastern
I know, I can bend space and time, so I guess I can bend Laibach’s rules as well. Quite honestly, I do believe that I like at least one band in every genre of music out there… except maybe polka. Why can’t someone like industrial, speed metal, post-punk, and so forth?
2 April 2007 at 11:32 am Eastern
totally agree.
to completely deny any “genre” (even though it’s not a genre) of music is ridiculous….*cough*
2 April 2007 at 11:34 am Eastern
totally agree.
to completely deny any “genre” (even though it’s not a genre) of music is ridiculous….*cough*
Rap-metal. I deny it thus.
2 April 2007 at 11:35 am Eastern
Smooth jazz as well, perhaps?
2 April 2007 at 11:36 am Eastern
ha, yeah, nu metal. definitely has potential for deniability.
2 April 2007 at 11:37 am Eastern
What about crunchy jazz? Oh wait, that’s peanut butter.
Nevermind.
2 April 2007 at 11:38 am Eastern
Otis Redding vs. Nirvana has replaced Marvin Gaye vs. The Band as the toughest decision I’ve had to make thus far.
2 April 2007 at 11:38 am Eastern
speaking of deniable music i got a david hasselhoff activity book the other day and it’s the best thing i have ever received.
2 April 2007 at 11:39 am Eastern
I like indie polka.
2 April 2007 at 11:41 am Eastern
oh nate, i finally got around to watching all the AWOK videos on your site.
when my friend and i drive to new york this summer let me know if you’re doing any shows. the videos were amazing.
2 April 2007 at 11:47 am Eastern
Oh wow, as I scan through nu-metal bands in my mind, I can see your point. If I happen to think of a decent one, I will let you know. Wish me luck; I get the feeling I will be looking/thinking for hours.
2 April 2007 at 11:54 am Eastern
I too like many of the listed “indie” bands and also like classic rock, jam bands, and tons of other stuff. I have very eclectic music taste. Why limit yourself to genre’s and stereotypes? Way to be openminded!
2 April 2007 at 11:56 am Eastern
pay no mind. laibach probably thinks david bowie is indie.
2 April 2007 at 11:56 am Eastern
I am from Pittsburgh originally and also have czech heritage so I like Polka too… Pergoies, cabbage and polka remind me of home.
2 April 2007 at 11:57 am Eastern
pierogies (proper spelling)
2 April 2007 at 11:58 am Eastern
Okay, time to share my thoughts on Round 3:
I think I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t get Radiohead, but they’re still better than System of a Down. WAKE UP! wake up! WHY’D YOU LEAVE THE KEYS UP ON THE TABLE? Crap.
I think Peter Gabriel v. The Kinks will probably the closest matchup in this bracket, even though it shouldn’t be. The Kinks should be kicking ass.
Don’t tell the Phishheads that AC/DC is winning!
I know a lot of people said Bowie v. Tool was hard for them, but it’s a slam dunk for me: Ziggy Stardust trumps Lateralus or however you spell it.
I really like The Shins, but Green Day wins on the strength or their early work. American Idiot was not very good, but doesn’t detract enough.
Go Lynyrd Skynyrd! Show the world the power of Southern rock unleashed!
You know, for all the bellyaching about Journey, someone’s voting for Perry & Co. They’re only trailing by 35 votes. Don’t stop believin!
Where’s the love for the Elvises? Presley should be destroying Van morrison, and Costello is losing to VU? Wha?
Come on People: The Allman Brothers are twice the band that Alice in Chains are. Grunge is great, but “man in the Box” & “Them Bones” are never going to be as good as “Jessica” and “Whippin’ Post”.
sorry about the length.
2 April 2007 at 11:59 am Eastern

I am about to blow your mind… I like EVERY band you listened (other than R.E.M. they are alright I guess) AND I like classic rock. Now what?
You are simply an indie kid, that’s all. I cannot understand how one can at least slightly like In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - crappily produced shitty lo-fi with the terrible Mangum vocals. All songs on it are stinkers.
The Stooges/Fun House sucked too Iggy couldn’t sing. All tracks sounded the same, the lyrics were riduculously primitive and they were mostly about taking the drugs and bresking the glass on their chests - absolute idiots whose image prompted the young people to act illicitly.
Joy Division- Curtis had crappy voice and all the songs sound the same, I was explained once that his Unknown Pleasure/Closer were rather a concept /blueprint than actual music for there is NO music. I heard that Joy Division were partly forgotten in 90’s and rightly so - their fame was alas restored by the indie critics in 00’s . Joy division are rather a CULT than a good listening. It is true for dozens of the cult indie bands.
BTW nu metal is better than indie Papa Roach or POD may be not the best music but they are miles better than Neutral Milk Hotel or Built To Spill.
I like: glam rock (Roxy Music, Brian Eno, David Bowie), Prog-Rock (King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Gabriel solo+ a bit of Yes though in general Yes sucked) kraut-rock(Can, Faust), Sparks, ska (Madness), synth-pop (pre-1988 Talk Talk, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys, Tears For Fears), brit-pop (Suede, Pulp, Verve), death-metaln (Death) and many other genre, I’m not restricted to classic rock only.
What I hate and always will hate is american indie rock and lo-fi of Pavement breed - Pavement are said by many to be The beatles of the indie rock - all those Pitchfork-approved bands.
2 April 2007 at 12:00 pm Eastern
What was it this morning w/ me actually having work to do at work. Whatever…now that that’s over.
Radiohead/Sys of a Down - This bracket just keeps hurtling towards the Nirvana/Radiohead match up that I want so much.
Stevie Wonder/Tom Waits - Tom Waits wins the ipod test. The more gravelly he he gets/the creepier his music gets, the more I listen.
Pixies/George Harrison - Not a matchup in my book. Dolittle singlehandedly beats GH solo work.
Green Day/Shins - Stone me for saying this, but I’ve never liked Green Day much. I’m not sure what it is. Also, despite the somewhat lackluster new Shins album, they still get the vote.
Smashing Pumpkins/Sonic Youth- Unfortunately, I stopped listening to Sonic Youth in high school even though I’ve heard they’ve made quite a bit of good music since then. Also, the SP Adore sucked big time. But Siamese Dream was so damn good….
The Cure/Mellencamp - They should have just gave The Cure a rest this round and pitted Robert Smith’s hair against Mellencamp. Roughly the same results.
Again, Go The Clash!
Nirvana/Otis Redding - I chose Nirvana, then slapped myself in the face. This one hurt. Try a little tenderness.
Beach Boys/Dre - I hate the Beach Boys. I can’t stand them.
Velvet Underground/Elvis Costello - Threw up in my mouth on this pick. Velvet Underground.
2 April 2007 at 12:00 pm Eastern
Laibach’s “what indie kids like and do not like” list is awfully reminiscent of the WWII-era “How to Spot a Jap” posters.
2 April 2007 at 12:01 pm Eastern
Also, does anyone read the big long posts that talk about every single matchup? I like short ones.
2 April 2007 at 12:01 pm Eastern
Hey Laibach. There’s a difference between the term indie (a band not signed to a major label) and the mindless devotion some people have to Pitchfork, Spin, Rolling Stone. The latter want to be told what is good music rather than make a decision on their own.
But there’s nothing wrong with listening to some of the bands you mentioned as “indie.” Except Pavement. I agree with you totally on that one: Pavement is SHIT.
2 April 2007 at 12:02 pm Eastern
My bad, I guess. Next time I’ll pepper the board with 12 messages at once, chopping the big one into an army of little ones. Would that be better?
2 April 2007 at 12:03 pm Eastern
i think laibach’s dream job was to work for pitchfork but they said no. hence his hatred for all things slightly/maybe/somewhat/not really at all pitchfork related.
2 April 2007 at 12:11 pm Eastern
I had PEROGIES last night. They reminded me of you.
2 April 2007 at 12:17 pm Eastern
I personally think Pitchfork are a bunch of pretentious bastards who don’t rate albums based on the actual musical content but instead some sort of agenda that each reviewer seems to have.
I think it’s lame to state that you only like group of music. I would say I’m not a huge fan of hip hop, but there are some hip-hop bands out there that I absolutely love (i.e. Jurassic 5, Mos Def, The Coup…).
2 April 2007 at 12:18 pm Eastern
Woohoo! Vnectar returns…stronger than ever I’m sure!
2 April 2007 at 12:24 pm Eastern
Laibach, who did you hate before pitchfork was created?
I have no doubt that with your ingenuity, you would have found SOMEONE to hate, but we’re all curious as to who it was.
Was it Raffi? I mean, I used to like Raffi AND Sharon, Lois, and Bram, and I bet that would have INFURIATED you.
2 April 2007 at 12:24 pm Eastern
Hardest Choice: Smashing Pumpkins vs. Sonic Youth. Voted for the Pumpkins
Easiest Choice: Beatles Vs. Billy Idol. Not Even Close
Coolest Matchup: Jimi Hendrix vs. Santana. Let’s have a guitar duel!
The “Do I really have to vote for one of these guys” matchup: Elvis vs. Van Morrison. They had some good songs, but I really don’t enjoy listening to them. Vote goes Elvis.
2 April 2007 at 12:28 pm Eastern
I’m glad people are voting Pixies over George Harrison. Coleman might not be, but keep it up.
2 April 2007 at 12:32 pm Eastern
“The “Do I really have to vote for one of these guys” matchup: Elvis vs. Van Morrison. They had some good songs, but I really don’t enjoy listening to them. Vote goes Elvis.”
Them? Van Morrison is but one man. A mighty man, for sure. But just one.
Unless you’re thinking of the band Van Morrison was in before he was famous, which strangely enough was called “Them”.
Anyway, I voted the Van the Man.
2 April 2007 at 12:35 pm Eastern
When I said “them” I was talking about Elvis and Van Morisson.
2 April 2007 at 12:40 pm Eastern
me = wilcofan’d
2 April 2007 at 12:52 pm Eastern
Pitchfork gave one of the best reviews I’ve read by them to Ghostface’s new album last year. I think they also ranked in the top 5 albums of 2006. I’m just saying Laibby… better not catch you listening to that indie mofo.
2 April 2007 at 1:21 pm Eastern
Wow… just wow. I cannot believe that someone has just tried to explain to me how Iggy Pop has primitive lyrics and a crappy voice, and then proceeds to tell me that Papa Roach and P.O.D. are better than a few of the bands on ‘the list.’ Wow.
2 April 2007 at 1:49 pm Eastern
I must add that I am at least glad that you are not exclusive to one genre of music, but you are still missing out on so much because of rash, unjustified generalizations… I only wish for everyone to be open-minded.
2 April 2007 at 2:01 pm Eastern
that and world peace WHITEgillis.
In my desire to stack the deck to get colplay over beasties I popped by the cp forum. apparently I am now considered spam there. It’s ok though, spam’s pretty tasty.
2 April 2007 at 2:02 pm Eastern
*coldplay surely
2 April 2007 at 2:02 pm Eastern
This is an interesting round.
The kinks and peter gabriel should go down to the wire. I think people may be giving gabriel credit for genesis stuff in this vote. Truly, his solo career should not really be that close in a vote w. the kinks in my opinion.
I found myself having a hard time deciding between nirvana and redding. I like nirvana a lot,and understand and respect their place in 90’s music, but i think that they are a bit overrated in our day–we will see in the future.
the allmans should be killing alice in chains. i dont get this one at all, and i like alice in chains.
i want to meet the 112 people who voted for billy idol v. the beatles. natural selection may be in order.
i understand why the dead and acdc are close, but i think the dead should win because of their place in americana. Acdc was a fun 80’s band who did party songs. The dead, love them or hate them, were a 30 year american institution. They deserve a vote over acdc.
2 April 2007 at 2:03 pm Eastern
Coldplay over the Beasties!?!
Well if I knew it was going to be THAT kind of party…
2 April 2007 at 2:07 pm Eastern
What did the Deadhead say when he ran out of pot?
“Holy crap, why’s this music so shitty?!?!”
I mean, probably it almost definitely happened like that.
2 April 2007 at 2:08 pm Eastern
“Don’t tell the Phishheads that AC/DC is winning!”
We already know…and it’s a travesty.
2 April 2007 at 2:10 pm Eastern
Never heard that one before…
2 April 2007 at 2:16 pm Eastern
Careful now. Most of the Phish fans aren’t even out of bed yet.
I know, I know…stereotypes and what not, but let’s let the voting decide if I’m right or wrong. I say the Dead make surge late in the day.
2 April 2007 at 2:16 pm Eastern
sooo nate–did you make that one up yourself?–trying to light the flames again?
Anyway, this is a moot point because, come on now–what self respecting deadhead ever runs out of pot?
2 April 2007 at 2:18 pm Eastern
I agree that both the Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead should be beating their respective competitors. Hopefully I will see this realized…
2 April 2007 at 2:27 pm Eastern
Nah, I kind of like the dead. Doesn’t mean that joke isn’t funny.
Socal, is that one actually that widespread that you find it cliched? I ask earnestly as a guy who’s actually interested in joke-science, and since I’ve only ever heard it from one other person.
2 April 2007 at 2:30 pm Eastern
nate–that is the oldest joke in the making fun of hippies book. sorry.
2 April 2007 at 2:30 pm Eastern
but i agree that it is funny.
2 April 2007 at 2:33 pm Eastern
I’ll take your word for it. I don’t have that book, but I’m on amazon looking for it.
2 April 2007 at 2:41 pm Eastern
i agree that the dead should be annihalating ac/dc.
a pile of steaming shit should annihalate ac/dc
2 April 2007 at 2:47 pm Eastern
Oh Hayley.
You wound me. Where is your love of the balls-out, ridiculous, silly rock that makes you want to sing in your car at the top of your lungs? I can’t believe that you’re only interested in gazing at your shoes, however interesting they may be.
2 April 2007 at 2:49 pm Eastern
