Band Madness: Round 3, Brackets C and D
And that’s Round 3! Great job kids. We’re going to tabulate the results, count the absentee ballots, and call up Diebold just for good measure…
And here they are! Sorry we had to close things down for a few minutes. So I guess this makes three servers we’ve crashed. Give yourself a pat on the back while you check out the results!

afi is gonna whupp madonna’s ass
4 April 2007 at 12:37 am Eastern
Was that a note of sarcasm in the intro to this round, or did a mod just try to paint AFI as the underdogs? Ah well.
Something to note: There are about as many votes for AFI (43) as there are for Bob Dylan (i.e. against Phish) (34). Someone’s knows his/her competition.
Anyway, you heard it here first, folks: AFI vs. Phish in the battle to see who is thing evaaaarrrrrr!!!!1!111!
4 April 2007 at 12:39 am Eastern
benmurphying, i don’t think AFI have been painted as the underdogs. It’s just been known for some time that they’re going up against one hell of a heavy hitter. And it was mentioned.
also…”battle to see who is thing evaaaarrrrrr!!!!1!111!”
what?
4 April 2007 at 12:41 am Eastern
Looking at it again, maybe it’s just that Dylan is splitting the Phish message board vote.
4 April 2007 at 12:42 am Eastern
I think a lot of the dylan fans are phish fans, and their allegiance, if you will, is being tested.
4 April 2007 at 12:43 am Eastern
giant typo. I omitted “the best” before “thing evaaaarrrrr!!!!1!!1!11!”
4 April 2007 at 12:43 am Eastern
it’s actually comparable to the tool/bowie matchup earlier in this bracket.
4 April 2007 at 12:46 am Eastern
My projected Phish v. AFI matchup?
4 April 2007 at 12:46 am Eastern
or dylan vs. phish?
4 April 2007 at 12:47 am Eastern
no, the dylan/phish matchup is comparable to the tool/bowie matchup earlier. similar, if not the same fanbase being split.
oh ze drama.
4 April 2007 at 12:48 am Eastern
I think Dylan’s going to take that one.
4 April 2007 at 12:50 am Eastern
me too.
I also think Madonna is going to pull ahead.
4 April 2007 at 12:54 am Eastern
I hope she will. As lame as this sounds/is, her music has actually meant a lot to me over the past couple of years, so I root for her even in irrelevant (yet awesome) contests like this one.
God, I always do this. It’s 1am, and I’m going to feel like shit at work tomorrow, but I just *had* to come here before I turned in.
Time for bed.
4 April 2007 at 12:58 am Eastern
personally, i don’t like her. for political reasons. nothing to do with her music.
4 April 2007 at 1:02 am Eastern
I’m fine with Madonna… I just prefer AFI.

4 April 2007 at 1:30 am Eastern
you enjoy myself!
4 April 2007 at 1:31 am Eastern
I’m not quite understanding the sometimes apparent distaste for Oasis on this site… did some feud carry over from last year? Anyways, Oasis and Dire Straits seems a little too close at this point. As much as I think the Gallaghers are childish and arrogant as hell, the music they play and the lyrics they spew out of their potty mouths are excellent. I still often listen to and enjoy “(What’s the Story?) Morning Glory” (skipping Track 3 of course) and “Definitely Maybe”. My “Brothers In Arms” CD is unfortunately too scratched up to play, from being more useful as a coaster, dog toy, and more recently as paraphernalia for my “Friends Don’t Let Friends Wear Cheesy Bandana Headbands” campaign.
4 April 2007 at 1:32 am Eastern
I think Dylan and Madonna should win, but that doesn’t really mean jack when it comes down to it.
4 April 2007 at 1:33 am Eastern
Some Oasis fans were major assholes last year and they were one of three bands whose messageboards flooded the website, along with eventual champion Nine Inch Nails and semi-finalist Depeche Mode.
4 April 2007 at 1:33 am Eastern
homesickalien, i get a lot of crap on this site for liking oasis. they’re not hated per se, it’s more of a running joke from last year.
4 April 2007 at 1:33 am Eastern
Agreed. I also have trouble representing/respecting musicians for their craft when the way they treat fans and people in general is deplorable i.e. Axl Rose of G’NR. They will never receive a vote from me for that reason, besides the fact that the new lineup is a smack in the face.
4 April 2007 at 1:36 am Eastern
In other news, I feel bad for Tupac, and I cannot believe how tight the race is right now between Neil Young and RATM. That match-up interests me.
4 April 2007 at 1:36 am Eastern
Ahhh, makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation!
4 April 2007 at 1:36 am Eastern
whitegillis, as far as madonna goes, my dislike for her stems for her use and advocation of fur.
4 April 2007 at 1:37 am Eastern
i had to vote for the hometown boy.
4 April 2007 at 1:40 am Eastern
Seriously?! That is my main reason as well! It is always interesting to meet someone with similar viewpoints. I was only mentioning the jerk-outside-of-the-band thing in reference to another reason that I refuse to vote for an artist, and more importantly I refuse to support the artist in terms of purchasing albums and other merchandise even if I somewhat enjoy them musically.
4 April 2007 at 1:42 am Eastern
yeah, i’m strongly anti-fur, among other things. so i am inherently strongly anti anyone who advocates it.
4 April 2007 at 1:43 am Eastern
in regards to your jerk out of the band thing, yeah i’ve stopped listening to a few bands i liked because i met one of the members. one in particular, was very rude to my best friend, and i dislike them very much. bad taste in the mouth kinda thing. although i still have their record on my wall.
4 April 2007 at 7:01 am Eastern
As far as Madonna vs. AFI, AFI has a definite lead right now, but let’s keep in mind that these early votes definitely include a huge rush of AFI fans who were beating down the door to vote for their band. I think we’re going to see it tighten up a lot before Friday night. I’m not counting out AFI, because they’ve got some of the best fans in this tournament, but Madonna is a real heavyweight.
4 April 2007 at 7:46 am Eastern
Could this be the end of Oasis?
4 April 2007 at 8:53 am Eastern
They already are losing the Tuesday side-match to Blur, to my happiness.
4 April 2007 at 9:00 am Eastern
Is this Van Halen with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar…. or that other guy? I can’t stand VH with Hagar, and I don’t know that other guy… I can’t vote on this one
4 April 2007 at 9:39 am Eastern
This is Van Halen with David Lee Roth, pre-crazy. Accept no substitutes.
4 April 2007 at 9:40 am Eastern
Annoyingly, it seems to think I’ve voted already. Anybody know how to reset that? Thanks.
4 April 2007 at 9:55 am Eastern
Is that “official” ?
4 April 2007 at 9:58 am Eastern
Is that “official” ?
No, but I think it will cause more people to vote for VH. No one likes Gary Charone and very few like Haggar.

THANK YOU Cubilce, but I refuse to vote on this until the “Powers that be” speak… Powers…Speak! Where are you Powers?
I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HAGAR or that other guy, only DLR!!
4 April 2007 at 10:07 am Eastern
No offense to the Phish fans, but I voted for Bob Dylan. I had to. And it wasn’t ’strategery’.
AFI’s falling behind. I guess I have to wait for all the other kids to get home from school… :/
4 April 2007 at 10:15 am Eastern
Is there a place to suggest nominees for next year?
4 April 2007 at 10:18 am Eastern
And now ladies and gentlemen (and Beefus), your Mid-Morning report for Bracket C & D:
I think everyone can agree that these matchups are a LOT harder than the other bracket, at least for this round.
Cream 225, CCR 223. Damn. I think Cream should move on, but I have a problem with Clapton’s solo work being in the mix as well.
Metallica is beating the White Stripes, proving that not everyone who votes is active on the comment threads.
Beck is leading Tom Petty by 3 in the “Battle of Artists who Make a Living off Appearing Not to Care about Anything.”
The Sex Pistols and their profilic career (ONE ALBUM!!) are leading Aerosmith by 20. Travesty.
Van Halen has a healthy lead on Aretha, but watch out people, she might eat them.
In what I think would be an upset if he pulls it out, Stevie Ray Vaughn only trails Fleetwood Mac by 20 votes. Show that bitch Stevie Nicks who’s boss Stevie!
GNR are beating Buddy Holly, showing that being dead will only get you so far in this tourney.
Or maybe that’s wrong…Chuck Berry is only trailing the Foo Fighters by 23.
Neil Young & Rage are going to go down to the wire. Neil’s up by 19 right now.
Does Paul MacCartney’s solo career include Wings? If not, Tupac should be winning. right now, Paul 316 - Pac 141
The Ramones are showing The Stooges what Real Punk sounds like, 319 - 118.
As the assault on Madonna and Bob Dylan continues by legions of crazed AFI and Phish fans, Esther is clinging to a 27 vote lead and Bob has a 22 vote lead on Trey & Co.
Two matchups that will be decides by 30 votes or less… Oasis is leading Dire Straits by 5, while The Band (no doubt recieving help from the Phanatics) has a 3 votes lead on Sublime. For shame Sublime! That’s not how to represent the LBC! What would Snoop think?
Finally, Public Enemy is benifiting from the “GODDAMN DAVE MATTHEWS SUCKS” vote, and may be one of the few hip-hop acts to survive into the fourth round, if not the only one.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled ranting.
4 April 2007 at 10:18 am Eastern
Dan, Hayley, Nate, Alex and Matt can disagree, but I know that I’m voting for pre-crazy David Lee Roth Van Halen when I vote.
4 April 2007 at 10:21 am Eastern
i still hate van halen. pre and post crazy.
actually i prefer post crazy just for the antics.
4 April 2007 at 10:23 am Eastern
Aerosmith sucks. Joe Perry is the worst guitarrist ever to have his own Les Paul edition. Sid Vicious killed his girlfried while high on smack soon after finishing Nevermind the Bollocks. ‘Nuff said.
It warms my heart that Phish is keeping up with Dylan. I voted for Bobby, but somehow the fact that those hippie bastards can keep up with one of the godfathers of rock makes me think we really can beat this here global warming.
Sublime vs. The Band. Hardest matchup so far, by far. It took me ten minutes to finally settle down, close my eyes, vote for my boy Rick Danko and move on. It still doesn’t feel good, but it had to happen.
4 April 2007 at 10:24 am Eastern
Oh, and Tupac should be killing lame-ass paul McCartney. Adult Contemporary music shouldn’t even be in this competition.
Maybe I’m amazed you didn’t quit music after you broke up the Beatles.
4 April 2007 at 10:24 am Eastern
I do disagree, Chris - when was David Lee Roth not crazy?
4 April 2007 at 10:26 am Eastern
This is actually Van Halen - The Gary Cherone era ONLY.
This post is sitting on an ice throne with 150 cameras around it making the MATRIX EFFECT.
Seriously, can we change that name to The Cherone Effect? That video was in 1997. Also, I think it’s much funnier that way.

How in the hell does killing your girlfriend improve your musical ability?

“Aerosmith sucks. Joe Perry is the worst guitarrist ever to have his own Les Paul edition. ”
Billie Joe Armstrong has a Les Paul Signature guitar. I’m fairly certain Joe Perry’s better than him.

cubicle…it doesn’t. but it sure proves street cred.

Les Paul was too indie.

Frank Zappa should be beating the Who.
4 April 2007 at 10:39 am Eastern
And killing your girlfriend while high on smack after making an album all about hating women, anarchy and drug abuse makes you legit, which is worth more than all the skill in the world.
That said, I still think Steely Dan should be winning.

Joe Perry is awesome. He wrote the theme song to the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon. You know the one that was so incredible it sounded like unicorns mating.
(The sound of unicorns mating is similar to a vocoder saying “spider blood, spider blood, radioactive spider blood” over and over.)

And is it a “Billy Joe Armstrong Edition Les Paul Signature,” or does he just play a Les Paul? Joe Perry plays a “Joe Perry Edition Les Paul Signature” that you can actually purchase by that name. And he is bad.

Both. I’ve never been the biggest Who fan, but Frank Zappa? Even with the Mothers of Invention, he doesn’t matchup with Townshend, Moon, Daltrey, and Entwhistle (sp?).

i’m not usually one to vote against bands, but public enemy definately got my vote for this exact reason.
and cigar, you have to be kidding… billie joe a better guitar player than joe perry?!
4 April 2007 at 10:51 am Eastern
I remember that! Okay, that was pretty bad, but the Edge doing the theme to the current “The Batman” cartoon is worse.
4 April 2007 at 11:08 am Eastern
A few things…
1. I am glad to see Public Enemy winning at the moment, and I hope Tupac follows suit.
2. My namesake is losing to Metallica! (John Gillis aka Jack White of the White Stripes, hence WHITEgillis)
3. I like Green Day and all, but very few people are worse guitarists than Billie Joe. How is “Good Riddance” an example of skill?
4. Who would’ve thought Oasis and Dire Straits would be so close?
4 April 2007 at 11:19 am Eastern
I don’t think it’s really fair to call Billie Joe a bad guitarist. I mean, the dude keeps time fine enough, and he’s just playing rhythm in a band that plays a simpler style. If he fucked that up, then you’d go and call him a bad guitarist. But he knows what he has to do and do it.
This is coming from a guy who doesn’t even care for Green Day all that much.
4 April 2007 at 11:20 am Eastern
We’re comparing him to Joe Perry, and by comparison, he IS a bad guitarist.

“Her” actually, but thank you. Like I said, I enjoy listening to Green Day, but Billie Joe does nothing but play power chords and simple, basic arrangements. I give him credit for creating a great sound and putting on a great live show (seriously, they are phenomenal live) but I just cannot bring myself to call him a good guitarist.
4 April 2007 at 11:37 am Eastern
Sorry about that. I guess I read that your namesake was Jack White and jumped to conclusions.
4 April 2007 at 11:44 am Eastern
Quite alright. I enjoy the music and admire Jack White for various reasons is all. I enjoy many bands, but simply settled on one for my message board name.
4 April 2007 at 11:44 am Eastern
I’m not calling him good either. I just thought it was odd that people were calling him among the worst ever, when I’ve never heard a song on which he didn’t do what he had to do. Mind you, he never does more or less than what he has to do. but he’s competent enough not to be on any worst guitarists ever list.
I mean, are we going to call Hank Williams a bad guitarist just cause his songs are simple to play? Same thing.
4 April 2007 at 11:49 am Eastern
No. Hank Williams was a fag8.
OASHIS!
4 April 2007 at 12:09 pm Eastern
Toughest Choice: REM-Flaming Lips. Both are really good bands, but Yoshime is one of my favorite albums ever, so I vote for the lips.
Easiest Choice: Pink Floyd-Alice Cooper. Pink Floyd is my favorite band left in the competition and I hate Alice Cooper
Coolest Matchup: Ramones-Iggy and the Stooges. Seriously, two of the best punk bands ever.
The “Do I really I have to vote for either of these guys” matchup: Sex Pistols-Aerosmith. Sex Pistols=Incredibly over-rated and pretty bad. Aerosmith=Annoying songs and horrible, horrible singing. I go with over-rated.
4 April 2007 at 12:15 pm Eastern
Cubicle, I got around to responding to your list of 20 guitar(r)ists on the AB Round 3 page. It’s a tome. Look at your own risk.
4 April 2007 at 12:17 pm Eastern
The Cliff’s Notes: Trey Basically came out on top, with a not to Page and Hendrix’s Corpse. Joe Perry is currently lying in a gutter next to the post, bleeding and perfomring autofalatio on himself.
4 April 2007 at 12:17 pm Eastern
nod, not not
4 April 2007 at 12:21 pm Eastern

4 April 2007 at 12:34 pm Eastern
I just wish his band would EVER change the three-chord repeated phrase they play in the background for ten minutes of every song. And I wish he would use a few different tones, or just turn down the distortion on his main tone.

4 April 2007 at 2:02 pm Eastern
I have a feeling the recently died/respect vote is keeping James Brown in the tournament.
Funny story… I saw Pink Floyd in Philly in 1994, and stayed at the Embassy Suites, across the street from the Four Seasons. I was up on like the 11th floor, and I saw a huuuuuuge limo pull in to the Four Seasons later that night. Hoping it was Pink Floyd, I rushed down to the street… to find James Brown waving from outside the Four Seasons. I’m pretty sure nobody was expecting that.
4 April 2007 at 2:07 pm Eastern
I have a feeling that that Live at the Apollo record is keeping him in the tournament in my head.

I think it’s up to you. Do you really like Aretha better than Van Halen?
4 April 2007 at 2:58 pm Eastern
It’s all how you interpret your own conception of what Van Halen is.
Myself, I interpret Van Halen as the David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison era.
This is incorrect, and there is no such thing, but I guess I voted for it.
4 April 2007 at 2:59 pm Eastern
I like Aretha better than Hagar, or what’s his name (Not Roth)
this is my voting order
VH with DLR
Aretha
VH with what’s his name
VH with Hagar
4 April 2007 at 3:04 pm Eastern
I can’t interpret this!! It could be any one of them.
Silly Nate
4 April 2007 at 3:04 pm Eastern
Well, I guess the question becomes: Did Van Halen with Roth make enough awesome music that, when added to the later crap, still puts them over Aretha?
4 April 2007 at 3:05 pm Eastern
No you’re not. I replied this morning.
4 April 2007 at 3:06 pm Eastern
By the way, we have Creed and Limp Bizkit in the tournament. Does ANYONE consider them to be in the 512 bands ever?
Might as well throw in Spinal Tap next year.

hmmm…. Hot for Teacher is an AWESOME song… I’ll have to think about it THAT way, thanks Cubicle

CRAP, sorry must’ve scrolled too fast
4 April 2007 at 3:10 pm Eastern
ARETHA it is then!
Next time, can you please be more specific as to who the singer is? It really makes my head hurt
4 April 2007 at 3:18 pm Eastern
You’ve just been swindled Boss. Hornswaggled by a huckster. Bamboozled.
4 April 2007 at 3:18 pm Eastern
No, we can’t. It’s up to you to put it all together in your hurthead.
4 April 2007 at 3:21 pm Eastern

Aretha is so much better than VH. Have you ever heard I Ain’t Never Loved a Man?

Wasn’t asking you. Hmph.
Just Kidding. It was meant to be more of an open question, since he was going on and on about VH.
4 April 2007 at 3:25 pm Eastern
But Van Halen absolutely DESTROYS Aretha. DESTROYS.
4 April 2007 at 3:29 pm Eastern
Hey, go check out the Led Zeppelin Ice Cream Challenge. We need some of you guys to come up with some lame puns. If yours is the best, we’ll promote a link for you on the homepage. Go! Go! I don’t care if the link does end up being Phantasy Tour, but somebody who isn’t me, Nate, Alex or Hayley needs to go post something.
4 April 2007 at 3:31 pm Eastern
How is Aretha-VH even a contest? Aretha’s got a good voice and all, but this is Halen! Even with Hagar they’re better than Aretha. (That other guy doesn’t count, just like the other guy for INXS doesn’t count.)
4 April 2007 at 3:32 pm Eastern
Extreme seemed to think he counted enough.

4 April 2007 at 3:33 pm Eastern
Let’s just split the difference. Aretha is going to now sing for Van Halen, and we all win.
4 April 2007 at 3:35 pm Eastern
that would be awesome Nate!

ANNOUNCEMENT:
To all the ladies out there that have androgynous screennames, I apologize in advance if I refer to you as “he, him, his, he’s, etc.”
THAT IS ALL.
4 April 2007 at 3:39 pm Eastern
You really should know better, at least by MY screen name!!

4 April 2007 at 3:43 pm Eastern
Aretha’s bands in the 60s were rediculous, funky drummers, 12-piece horn sections, great guitarists. Van Halen is like Vodka: it’ll do the job, but it kind of tastes shitty. Aretha is pure Bourbon Whiskey, a little mean at the outset, but strong and sweet all the way through. Those who consider her not “rockin’” enough owe it to themselves to buy some of her early albums, esp. I ain’t Never Loved a Man, the greatest r&b album ever. Better than Live At The Apollo.

And…you lost me.
4 April 2007 at 3:46 pm Eastern
I agree that it’s not a contest.
Aretha is one of the all time great female soul/R&B vocalists.
Van Halen are cheesedicks.

HUH?
4 April 2007 at 3:55 pm Eastern
Your last post confused me.
“You really should know better, at least by MY screen name!!”
Why?
4 April 2007 at 4:08 pm Eastern
You really should know better, at least by MY screen name!!
And…you lost me.
Because her name is The Boss of You…women are the boss of men…GET IT??!?!?
Stay tuned while I explain why black people and white people are different…but in funny ways.
(TBoY, I thought it was obvious as well.)
4 April 2007 at 4:09 pm Eastern
Because I am The Boss of You, I’m female, you should know better that a female would be your boss.
It’s a joke
Did I make sense that time?

4 April 2007 at 4:16 pm Eastern
I had to wait to post till Phish took the lead.
GO PHISH

Sorry. Little slower than usual today.
4 April 2007 at 4:19 pm Eastern
That is a Damn Travesty.
4 April 2007 at 4:19 pm Eastern
Phish winning, not your lack of posts.
4 April 2007 at 4:20 pm Eastern
I have to completely disagree with you on this one. While believe me I am no Dave Matthews BAND fan. I def don’t deny the impact they have had the last 12 or so years. The drummer is one of the best to ever sit behind a kit. You need to look past just the front man because his band are obviously very talented musicians and the band has had a huge impact on music.
4 April 2007 at 4:21 pm Eastern
you didn’t miss me?
4 April 2007 at 4:24 pm Eastern

Oh course I did! But the lack of posting was depressing, not a travesty.

I just think talent, impact, lasting power, your live show all are reasons to vote for a band whether you are a fan or not. Dave Matthews Band wins in all these categories against Public Enemy. I mean they must be a good live band because year in and year out they are selling out shows.
4 April 2007 at 4:43 pm Eastern
Just as long as you know that you’re supposed to vote for the artist you enjoy listening to more. That’s it.
Influence does not matter, unless it makes you enjoy DMB more.
4 April 2007 at 5:16 pm Eastern
Yeah, leave that influence and impact shit to the Recording Academy. We just want to see who people like the most.
4 April 2007 at 5:52 pm Eastern
buddy holly beat bela fleck and modest mouse? let’s get that sucka!
4 April 2007 at 5:53 pm Eastern
Finally the Phish and AFI fans are bringing the ruckus. What the hell took so long? I was beginning to think they were all talk.
4 April 2007 at 6:17 pm Eastern
funny that phish vs dylan and madonna vs afi have way more votes than any other matchup, by hundreds!
4 April 2007 at 6:29 pm Eastern
go phish!
4 April 2007 at 6:29 pm Eastern
Not really. That only happens, um, every time a particular fanbase shows up. Let’s be generous and say they each have 400 votes more than the average matchup. That means they could only muster 400 votes more than they would have been getting otherwise. Drop either AFI or Phish down by 400, and they’d both be losing.
All it really proves is that they have organized, devoted fanbases. That’s good in itself. That’s what won the tournament for Nine Inch Nails last year. But I hope they don’t think they’re proving anything. If they’re looking for validation that they’ve chosen the best band in the world to support, winning Band Madness is pretty weak validation.
We’ve done everything we can do to prevent rampant cheating, but it’s hardly scientific. It’s winning the presidency but only telling people in Texas that there’s an election going on.
Good luck to them though. If their fans are well-behaved here, and don’t attempt to cheat, then they’ve earned the victory as much as anybody possibly can.
4 April 2007 at 6:31 pm Eastern
What I’d be interested to know is how many Phish fans are voting for Madonna and how many AFI fans are voting for Dylan. It’s possible that neither matchup has anything to do with the two bands involved in either one. Rather, it would just be one battle between message boards that is being fought on two fronts.
This possibilty, of course, presupposes that both factions know that the other is their best competition. I don’t know if that’s the case. Either way…
INTRIGUE!
4 April 2007 at 6:33 pm Eastern
Definitely. I just wish they’d have the consideration to stick around and vote in some of the other matchups. It’s pretty fucking lame when they only stop here for two seconds and only vote once. It only makes them seem single-minded and insecure about their choice in music.
4 April 2007 at 6:45 pm Eastern
Don’t drag AFI fans into that, because all of the ones I know of do vote in every category.
And furthermore, I did vote for Dylan, but not to secure any future success for AFI but because Dylan is better.

a few people responded already, but i don’t deny that dave matthew’s band is comrised of some very talented musicians. that being said, i still can’t stand to listen to that crap. hence my vote for public enemy.
