Band Madness!
Band Madness: Round 6 - The Sweet 16
Well, it was a long, hard fight, but Pink Floyd came out on top. AFI fans, you did your best. A few bad apples nearly ruined it for all of you, but in the end we made the best compromise we could, and your band went out as honorably as possible. You guys are dedicated to a fault, and we can’t wait to have AFI in the tournament again next time.
Now it’s up to Pink Floyd fans. Your strongest competition in the tournament so far has been knocked out, and Nine Inch Nails isn’t here to stop you this time. You’re up against The Doors next - does this mean a free ride to the Final Four? Good luck.
Want to talk about this crazy round over the weekend? Wouldn’t you know it, we’ve got a forum for just that sort of thing!
One last thing…the first round of our mini-tournament, Band Gladness, will be up and available for voting all weekend, so go ahead and vote! Remember to vote on which band in each matchup you think is the happier band!

23 April 2007 at 12:14 am Eastern [ quote ]
Wow, my self esteem will really be damaged if Pink Floyd loses. Don’t talk about Pink Floyd! We’ll only encourage AFI fans! Boo hoo!
23 April 2007 at 12:15 am Eastern [ quote ]
Bowie vs Depeche already? Aww man.
23 April 2007 at 12:15 am Eastern [ quote ]
exactly. I mean, how DARE we insinuate that Pink Floyd may, just may deserve to win.
I mean, it’s only Pink Floyd, it’s not like they are legendary or even GOOD.
23 April 2007 at 12:16 am Eastern [ quote ]
i know. i had a bit of a conniption.
another rematch.
i have to say. i’ve gotta give it to bowie.
why? because like a few others in this contest, he’s deserving.
23 April 2007 at 12:16 am Eastern [ quote ]
Yeah. I should call my parents and tell them to get on here and vote for Pink Floyd. I can’t bear to see them lose.
23 April 2007 at 12:17 am Eastern [ quote ]
You sarcasm is thick like maple syrup. Delicious, delicious syrup…
23 April 2007 at 12:20 am Eastern [ quote ]
hey!
we’re not crazy, we’re just defensive. lol
may the best band win. (*cough* AFI *cough*)
23 April 2007 at 12:26 am Eastern [ quote ]
Hey guys, we’re not trying to bait you into anything. We’re just busting you for how ridiculously paranoid you’ve been. There’s a very good chance that Pink Floyd will win, but we’ve got a long time to go before we get to that point. We’re not out to get you. Stop being so paranoid.
23 April 2007 at 12:27 am Eastern [ quote ]
Haha, you broke down and got serious first.
:P.
23 April 2007 at 12:28 am Eastern [ quote ]
i nearly pulled my hair out over a few of those match ups. i nearly did the whole “close my eyes and click” thing, but in the end i think i chose well. i won’t say who my votes ended up going to though.
23 April 2007 at 12:28 am Eastern [ quote ]
wait…we’re not?
well, now i just don’t know what to do with myself.
23 April 2007 at 12:29 am Eastern [ quote ]
I love reading your comments. =]
23 April 2007 at 12:29 am Eastern [ quote ]
it’s totally getting to that point.
the point where people’s computers break down due to excessive sweating.
23 April 2007 at 12:30 am Eastern [ quote ]
Actually, the only tough ones I had were the Bowie vs. DM and The Who vs. U2.
23 April 2007 at 12:33 am Eastern [ quote ]
i had 3, Bowie vs DM, the Who vs U2 and Pink Floyd vs AFI
23 April 2007 at 12:35 am Eastern [ quote ]
Trust me, I’m not being paraniod.
I have a gut feeling that Pink Floyd will beat AFI, so I’m not gonna freak out over anything.
Hopefully AFI do win, but if they don’t I’m extremely happy they made it to the Top 16.
23 April 2007 at 12:35 am Eastern [ quote ]
If I didn’t like AFI so much, I would have had trouble with that one, too.
23 April 2007 at 12:37 am Eastern [ quote ]
I wish The Who and U2 were split into different matches because I didn’t want to vote for either. Some of these were ridiculously hard; it took me at least 10 minutes to determine my votes. Bowie vs. DM and Zeppelin vs. Cash were the hardest for me personally. I also reluctantly voted for DMB over The Doors because I hate them THAT much.
23 April 2007 at 12:41 am Eastern [ quote ]
Come on, guys. The Who vs. U2 is not a difficult choice at all. The Who are obviously meant to win.
And yes, David Bowie against Depeche Mode is way too intense. But I like Bowie better so that’s who I gave my vote to.
23 April 2007 at 12:41 am Eastern [ quote ]
If you all didn’t like AFI you shouldn’t have not put them in this competition. The reason we all think you are attacking their fans is because every single post on this site is about how AFI should lose or how you can’t believe They couldn’t make it this far. Trust me not everyone is a Pink Floyd fan. I’m Not. And the reason AFI fans are so feverish is because they ARE talented and dedicated to their music and fans. They are better live than on a cd. Now how many people can say that about even half of the bands that have been in this competition? And I don’t just mean watching them live I’m talking sound too. Its way better live. They desearve to be in this competiotn, and They deserve to be this far in it. How many people Can say they’ve met their favorite band in person . I can. AFI gives back hardcore to their fans, and they are just sooo talented musically and lyrically, and performance wise, and personality wise. They are an all around package. So yeah we DF’ers will go crazy and vote for them no matter if u match them up with god himself.
23 April 2007 at 12:43 am Eastern [ quote ]
we don’t like a lot of the bands in this competition.
the reason everyone is joking around….joking around…is because you all make it so darn easy.
23 April 2007 at 12:43 am Eastern [ quote ]
Here’s my take on Round 6. Keep in mind, this is merely my opinion, so don’t get your shorts in a knot. If I say that your favorite band sucks (I’m looking right at you, David Bowie fans!), it’s because I think that they suck, not because everyone with good taste or everyone with any common sense or anyone who isn’t from a David Bowie website thinks that a particular artist is a fucking joke who should have lost in the first round. Ok? What I state as my opinion doesn’t affect your silly-ass opinion or invalidate your meaningless views which I find to be equal to my own, but yet still far inferior.
Hendrix over Queen - Two classic rock bands that are pretty much as far as they should expect to get. Close call, but Hendrix is better.
Bowie over Depeche Mode - By a lot, really. Bowie’s one of the most innovative artists of all-time and has made great music for nearly 40 years. Depeche Mode I like, but I certainly don’t think they’re in the same league.
Pearl Jam over The Beatles - Bracket B features 4 of my 5 favorite bands (bastards…). Pearl Jam gets a slight nod over the Beatles, though it would be ridiculous if they actually beat them in the tournament.
Stones over Nirvana - Same deal with the last match. Literally #3 over #5.
Zeppelin over Cash - Zeppelin is my favorite band bar none. Cash is towards the top, but that’s not good enough. It does seem like Zeppelin is still cruising.
The Who over U2 - Classic rock of the 70s vs. classic rock of today. U2’s been coasting for awhile now, so I’ll give it to U2.
Pink Floyd over AFI - Closest match of the round. Tough call really. One band is a legend in their genre, having produced 3 of the greatest albums of their era and signified the pinnacle of a sound that defined a generation. The other band is Pink Floyd, who are also quite good. I really couldn’t decide, so I flipped a coin and Pink Floyd won.
The Doors over the Dave Matthews Band - Really? In round 6? That’s a lotta upsets… Anyway, I do prefer the Doors. I think both artists’ music is pretty cheesy, but the Doors can usually at least pass the “not silly unless I think about it” test for longer than DMB does.
Now everyone, let’s have a fun Round 6 and not kill each other? Can’t we all just get along? Boyz In The Hood, increase the peace.
23 April 2007 at 12:44 am Eastern [ quote ]
Heh, could you imagine how upset God would be if he lost to AFI?
23 April 2007 at 12:44 am Eastern [ quote ]
Everything you said is soooo right!
23 April 2007 at 12:45 am Eastern [ quote ]
i believe the appropriate term would be “armageddon”.

Interviewer: Do you believe in God?
Davey: I am God.
Hunter: I don’t. I’m an athiest.
Interviewer: You don’t believe in Davey?!?!
Hunter: No.
AFI’s bassist is the coolest guy around.
23 April 2007 at 12:50 am Eastern [ quote ]
Now, would he rain hail and brimstone upon the band themselves or the fans that voted for them?
Darren: I completely agree about Zeppelin vs. Cash. At first, it took me a while to consider, but I realized that no one could surpass Zeppelin in my mind. Yes, I am looking at you, Beatles…
23 April 2007 at 12:51 am Eastern [ quote ]
Darren: “Keep in mind, this is merely my opinion, so don’t get your shorts in a knot.”
The correct phrase is “don’t get your KNICKERS in a knot”. You silly human.

Haha, I forgot about that one. There’s our answer. That is why AFI wins in the matchup: it’s God plus three.
23 April 2007 at 12:53 am Eastern [ quote ]
I’ve begun to dread voting.
I mean, Queen vs. Jimi Hendrix? David Bowie vs. Depeche Mode? Led Zepellin vs. Johnny Cash? I’ll just get my parakeets to vote for me.
I have a feeling Led Zepellin will win, though. They annihilate every band on their path.
23 April 2007 at 12:54 am Eastern [ quote ]

Knickers are British shorts. I’m an American. lol

Posh. I’m an American too, but Americans suck … and David Bowie’s afraid of us.
23 April 2007 at 1:00 am Eastern [ quote ]
You don’t fucking get it, do you? Nobody’s out to get AFI. We don’t hate AFI. People like YOU are the reason they’ve gotten such a bad rap in the tournament. You’re constantly on the defensive and you’re incredibly insecure about your taste in music. You think the world is out to get you. Don’t bother me with your self-pity. You make it way to easy to pick on you by being such willing victims. Maybe instead of whining about how sad this makes you, you should try to make a case for why people should vote for AFI.
23 April 2007 at 1:01 am Eastern [ quote ]
“Posh. I’m an American too, but Americans suck … and David Bowie’s afraid of us.”
As well he should be. His Spiders won’t help him now. The fly will break his bones this time.

23 April 2007 at 1:03 am Eastern [ quote ]
Careful Chris. With all those people dressed in black clothing and wearing a lot of make-up, it’s going to be tough determining which are AFI fans and which are murderous vampires. We may need Buffy Summers on our side in this battle. lol

Hayley: “do you know what posh means?”
Yes, it means luxurious, elegant, furnished, etc. More recently, however, the word has been used to describe something that is ridiculous among both Brits and Americans.
23 April 2007 at 1:10 am Eastern [ quote ]
That was the best thing I’ve heard all night.
And even though it doesn’t sound right to me, apparently, the correct way to say it is “Woe is I.”

EMOtion. Haha. Good one, Hayley.

Has it been pointed out already that if AFI fans had discovered this site one round later AFI would not be in it right now?
The fan base of pretty much any band of their ilk (not genre, but their musical caliber and appeal) could have mobilized to this degree at the right time.

Man, I’m really happy and kind of surprised to see Bowie off to a nice lead. Also, Led Zeppelin vs. Cash was tough for me, I chose LZ. I hope this isn’t the end of the line for AFI but, Pink Floyd is their hardest competetion yet.
23 April 2007 at 1:38 am Eastern [ quote ]
I saidf they were better live than on cd, and they are awsome song writers both musically and lyrically. And I look up to them because of there moralistic view points and how they stick to them. They are the most down to earth people u will ever meet, they talked to me like a friend not just another firend. The fact that they are not fake and every bit of who they claim to be makes me even more of a fan as well as others thats y I added personlity.

I haven’t heard the word “ilk” in about two years. I’m surprised I still know what it means since it was about the same time that I “discovered” the word.
Buffy, take it from me, shut up. Look, do yourself a favor and actually check the AFI boards. If you did that, you would have gotten the “memo” we sent out in the Band Madness thread. I do have a confession, however. Every time I FIRST read a bash against AFI (especially on here), I get pissed, but then I laugh about it and think it’s jolly good fun. You should try it some time. Everyone likes someone who can laugh at the things they love.
23 April 2007 at 1:42 am Eastern [ quote ]
Excuse me did I start off by verbally attacking you and singling out you? you people are the paranoid ones thinking i’m attacking you when all I wanted to do was explain why I and other AFI fans think they are worthy of this competion. At no point did I say someone was out to get them, just to stop sweating their balls soo much (but I put it in a nicer way) jeesh you non AFI fans are way tooooooooo sensitive. Keep talking shit your just making me more popular /
23 April 2007 at 1:43 am Eastern [ quote ]

“theres such a thing as being a dick who has nothing to do then make fun of people. Look into it.”
Lord knows you wouldn’t have to look far…
Yeah, if AFI fans hadn’t discovered this site before the end of their half of Round 1, they would have been voted out by No Doubt. They were far behind and suddenly got a few hundred votes injected before the poll closed. Last year, NIN, Depeche Mode and Oasis made it a few rounds on their own before the floods began. Even Phish legitimately beat King Crimson this year on their own. AFI? Nope. Not even the first round. In a 512 band tournament. Against No Doubt. If you’re wonder, yes that’s No Doubt, they crappy ska band whose only good deed was keeping the madness of Gwen Stefani contained for 15 years before it burst forward from the chest of popular music to run through air vents and attack Ripley and that robot.
“You people just wanna make fun of AFI fans like me because u have nothing better to do than break someone down.”
I don’t know if you’d be the right person to make fun of people for wasting their time on this site, really. Aren’t you doing the exact same thing from a different point of view?
“my name is after my favorite TV show character. I use it on everything, Myspace, Email, DF Name. Everywhere.”

don’t lie.
youre not laughing your ass off. (by the way, did you know that chatspeak contains an expletive?)

how about we change the subject since talkingabout me seems to enrage people? You don’t like my opion than tell me why you think AFI sux soo bad instead of taking a personal attack out on me. The post was about AFI.
23 April 2007 at 1:49 am Eastern [ quote ]
WHITEgillis, I thought you were a White Stripes fan? Everyone knows an AFI fan cannot serve two masters, as it will displease the one true God.
23 April 2007 at 1:50 am Eastern [ quote ]
there was a very good chance that Madonna, Ray Charles, and the Ramones would win too and yet AFI somehow barely managed to pull through everytime, i wouldn’t underestimate the AFI fansbases determination

don’t give yourself too much credit.
as it stands you’re like the last kid in gym class to get picked and everyone laughs at.

i’m 23 years old u think I’m upset cause someone doesn’t like my opinion and / or lack of grammar skills? No I don’t . I know I can’t spell. Their are worse things in life. You all thin k You are getting under my skin when you are really just entertaining me 10 times more than I am u. like I said If you hate me soo much change the subjecvt and ignore me.

You bring up a good point, Darren. I am a fan of all genres of music (at least the ones I have heard… I am not going to claim that I listen to national music of every country on the planet).
23 April 2007 at 1:52 am Eastern [ quote ]
oh i hope that’s not true, cos that means i’m going to hell
23 April 2007 at 1:53 am Eastern [ quote ]
i am not trying to get under your skin.
i am just thoroughly enjoying your silly indignation.
23 April 2007 at 1:54 am Eastern [ quote ]
although i find it hard to believe you are unable to properly spell “you” and “why”.
23 April 2007 at 1:54 am Eastern [ quote ]
Thank you.
And yes the competition has been mindblowing. I didn’t think we would beat Madonna. She’s such an Icon.
23 April 2007 at 1:57 am Eastern [ quote ]
Didn’t Davey just recently say in the new edition of Spin magazine that he would want to take The White Stripes on tour with him?
And Buffy, half of us who are currently talking on here are AFI fans. Calm down.

Blasphemy. Has this site taught you nothing? You can like one band and one band only. Should you choose to be open-minded about a variety of artists it might cause blindness and hairy palms. lol
“oh i hope that’s not true, cos that means i’m going to hell”
Let me check my list… Oooh, sorry eloquentdelirium, you actually are going to hell, but not for that. It’s for that thing you did that one time. Legally, I’m not supposed to go into more detail than that, but I can’t hold my tongue when permanent markers are being huffed.

That would be an awesome concert!!!!!!

Wow a girl after my own heart, Loves BtVS and AFI, my favorite two obsessions. personally though i liked Willow more than Buffy, i guess i could just relate to her more being a geek myself.

That was amazing. When I saw the word “haiku” I thought of “Pikachu” … which made me think of the song by Apoptygma Berzerk. Yes, that’s right. I’m a techno/electronic/etc. girl.

wow, there are alot of hard match-ups to choose from on this round. pink floyd vs. AFI, two of my favorite bands. Put up against eachother. Im going to have to say that my vote goes to AFI, only because i listen to them more. David Bowie definantly got my vote though, i hate to vote against depeche…this is really going to be a close round for alot of bands.
23 April 2007 at 2:05 am Eastern [ quote ]
i like when sarah michelle gellar said that AFI is better live than on CD and then said something about can you say that about half the bands here and then says shes 23.
i, being 21, have had the chance to see many of these bands live: the beatles, jimi hendrix, led zeppelin, pink floyd, even one of my favorite bands nirvana all bowed out before i was even aware of music.
23 April 2007 at 2:05 am Eastern [ quote ]
by looking at what you have been saying so far, it does seem like you are getting very upset. This doesn’t seem amusing for you at all. Just sit take a deep breathe and RELAX! haha
23 April 2007 at 2:05 am Eastern [ quote ]
I’m afraid about what’s going to happen when AFI goes up against David Bowie. I mean … I’ve been listening to Bowie since I was seven. It’s going to kill me, but as a 5C-er, I must do my duty.
23 April 2007 at 2:07 am Eastern [ quote ]
vote for who you enjoy listening to more.

23 April 2007 at 2:07 am Eastern [ quote ]
lets just hope it doesnt have to come to that
23 April 2007 at 2:07 am Eastern [ quote ]
but let’s be realistic here….it should really read as “if AFI goes up against Bowie”
i mean, come on. Pink Floyd.

no haikus
theres a thread on the df message board somewhere where everyone could only speak in haikus and after reading all of them my brain thought in haiku form for the rest of the day.

We sure do!
23 April 2007 at 2:09 am Eastern [ quote ]
those are only a select few bands. This competiton started with like 300 plus right? Most bands I’ve seen live today have just disapointed me. It is rare though to find a band that is at least equal to how they sound on a cd as they do live, or even better. That was really the opinion I was trying to get across.

i considered only responding here in haiku. but nixed it.
for the record, i didn’t write that one.
it’s from a book called hipster haiku. but it just fits me so fricking perfectly.

Bowie vs AFI would be the hardest matchup for me to choose. I love that cover of “Ziggy Stardust” that AFI did. I think I would go AFI.
