Band Madness: Round 8: The Final Four
Two undefinable artists with unique catalogues and an unmatched combination of commercial, ciritcal, and popular admiration. Two legendary classic rock bands whose albums have provided the soundtrack to the lives of countless millions across a half dozen generations.
Four bands. Four bombastic descriptions. Two will advance. One question: Whom do you like better?

David Bowie and Pink Floyd!!
7 May 2007 at 12:40 am Eastern
David Bowie and an abtension based on my only-cursory understanding of the other band’s catologues!
7 May 2007 at 12:47 am Eastern
I just registered to say that Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are not very good. Who is voting on this thing, 13 year old stoners? Anyhow, I went with the Beatles (even though I have been listening to hell of Bowie lately) and Pink Floyd, for Piper at the Gates of Dawn and See Emily Play.
My question is why aren’t Bob Dylan, the Talking Heads and The Smiths up there with the Beatles? That is a fucking final four.
7 May 2007 at 1:04 am Eastern
Yes, Bob Dylan losing to the Doors nearly gave me a brain aneurysm. The Talking Heads lost to Nirvana,I believe (terrible), and I do not remember who The Smiths lost to… you can check in the brackets, but I am too lazy to do so. The first two were undoubtedly sad losses though.
7 May 2007 at 1:43 am Eastern
Fucking Awful, and predictable turnout. Whatever. Pink Floyd and Bowie are most deserving in the end. An uninteresting conclusion to say the least.
7 May 2007 at 1:52 am Eastern
Yeah, pretty predictable but so it goes.
Bowie and Zeppelin.
I’d like to put in my formal nomination for Justin Timberlake in next year’s competition.
7 May 2007 at 1:55 am Eastern
The only reason the final 4 are predictable is because they’re 4 of the greatest artists of all-time.
Do you maybe think it would be more accurate with Phish and AFI in the final 4?
Beatles over Bowie
Zeppelin over Floyd
7 May 2007 at 2:41 am Eastern
I’m pullin for both Bowie and Pink Floyd, although, I wouldn’t be crushed if Zeppelin won.
I’d like to nominate Tenacious D for next years competition! ALL HAIL THE D!
7 May 2007 at 3:01 am Eastern
David Bowie and Led Zepplin with David Bowie all the way. If AFI can’t win then one of AFI’s biggest inspirations and one of Davey’s personal hero’s should, plus Pink floyd is so overrated and definitely getting old(not as in age)
7 May 2007 at 3:06 am Eastern
“If AFI can’t win then one of AFI’s biggest inspirations and one of Davey’s personal hero’s should”
right. i mean, that IS the important thing here.
7 May 2007 at 3:33 am Eastern
well there is the slight fact that David Bowie rocks my socks and was incredibly hot and amazing in Labyrinth….
7 May 2007 at 3:55 am Eastern
fuck man motherfucker fuck fuck fuck
bowie and zeppelin
Phish and AFI in the final four wouldn’t be accurate, but at least it’d be entertaining. Or nauseating. I confuse the two too often.
7 May 2007 at 8:34 am Eastern
Pink Floyd really is two different bands anyway, the Barrett version (which I much prefer) and the post-barrett. You could probably make the case for three bands, with post-dark side being another one. I think a lot of people get turned off by the self-seriousness and bleakness of the Wall and Dark Side. Piper’s got a sense of humor and weirdness that Waters never seemed to get. Still, it’s not for everybody.
But I did vote for them over Zeppelin. I like a lot of Zeppelin, but there’s so much sameness in their songs. Too many of the songs come down to just a basic riff (however usually they’re some of the most memorable riffs in music).
And Beatles/Bowie was a tough choice but I had to go with the Beatles if only for my boy GH. Bowie though, I think is the only one here who has the ability to win purely on his body of work, and not partially on his accumulated legend. The other three are the kind of bands people vote for because they’ve already been crowned “greatest band ever” at some point.
7 May 2007 at 8:40 am Eastern
I think the only fair way to find a winner amongst the Final Four is through an arm-wrestling competition.
Seems only fitting…
7 May 2007 at 10:17 am Eastern
But everyone left is old and really skinny…it would probably be boring.
Beatles and Zeppelin!
Bob Dylan isn’t here because Phish fans were.
Talking Heads and The Smiths aren’t here because they don’t have enough fans that were aware of this contest. Don’t blame us, Blame the fans of those bands for not showing up. And if you didn’t show up, then blame yourself. But only a little bit.

It would make for a fitting “Over The Top 2″ plot, then. Based on Sly’s reasoning for making movies.
7 May 2007 at 11:26 am Eastern
Oh, simmer down now. The former is debatable (but partly true) and the latter is ridiculous.
This competition isn’t about ‘accuracy’ anyway.
7 May 2007 at 11:34 am Eastern
If it’s so predictable, how come no one seems to agree on their choices?
7 May 2007 at 11:50 am Eastern
Who you calling a 13 year old stoner, when you just said ‘hell of’? What are you 14?
7 May 2007 at 11:55 am Eastern
“Piper’s got a sense of humor and weirdness that Waters never seemed to get.”
Thats because Gilmour and Waters did not fill their sytsems full of acid to the point of insanity, lol.

Get the Strap!
What a ridiculous movie. I jumped over to IMDB to look at the quotes, and my favorite one is this:
My body is an engine, my fist is a fireplug, and I GONNA LIGHT HIM UP!!
7 May 2007 at 2:39 pm Eastern
I wonder if Sammy Hager would like to remove his name from that movie? He sang the theme song, “Winner Takes It All”.
After also reading IMDB, I read that John Wetton originally wrote and sang the song, but felt his voice wasn’t “mean” enough. Gee, ya think?
7 May 2007 at 2:42 pm Eastern
“Some fight for money… Some fight for glory… He’s fighting for his son’s love.”
Good stuff.
7 May 2007 at 4:35 pm Eastern
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The Who definitely deserve to be in the final 4…
(I voted for The Beatles and Pink Floyd)
7 May 2007 at 5:16 pm Eastern
All four of the remaining “bands” are legends and completely viable entries in the final four.
7 May 2007 at 5:36 pm Eastern
“Bob Dylan isn’t here because Phish fans were.”
What?
As one of the Phish fan board regulars, I’ll tell you that once Phish lost, 95% of the people from that board forgot about the contest and moved on.
There was no ‘revenge’ voting to bring Dylan down. In fact, there was a large contingent of people from the Phish boards who voted for Dylan OVER Phish (including me).
I don’t have an explanation of how the Doors beat Dylan, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t disgust me…
7 May 2007 at 5:37 pm Eastern
Oh, and Beatles over Bowie and Zeppelin over Floyd.
7 May 2007 at 5:47 pm Eastern
I got who knocked out Dylan mixed up, that’s all.
7 May 2007 at 9:44 pm Eastern
I really hope Floyd wins over Zeppelin but I’m not gonna bet on it…
7 May 2007 at 11:25 pm Eastern
man, fuck led zeppelin.
7 May 2007 at 11:26 pm Eastern
that is all.
8 May 2007 at 12:58 am Eastern
So, I just wanted to say that all 4 of these artists are great. I personally am going Floyd over Zeppelin because I love Gilmore’s guitar work and am obsessed with Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Wish You Were Here which were all just so emotional, also parts of The Final Cut are stupendous. Zeppelin had great works too, but not as many (IMO) as Floyd.
As for the other match. I have never really listened to any Bowie (so if anyone has an album that I should look up lemme know), so I have to go with The Beatles.
8 May 2007 at 2:07 am Eastern
Ah shit, this is the hardest vote for me so far.
*cringes* Beatles over Bowie, Zeppelin over Floyd.
8 May 2007 at 4:24 am Eastern
wow with no AFI fans to make fun off the comments for this round have really gone down and have become quite boring..now what can we do to spice things up…? oh and David Bowie all the way! though i think i might have mentioned that already…
8 May 2007 at 10:57 am Eastern
if you want some albums to listen to by Bowie start with “Hunky Dory” and “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust”
as for who should be in the championship…..Bowie vs. Zeppelin
8 May 2007 at 11:23 am Eastern
I know a lot of people love Zeppelin, and I certainly own all their albums, but are they anyone’s “favorite band?”
8 May 2007 at 11:38 am Eastern
They’re mine.
8 May 2007 at 11:38 am Eastern
That didn’t sound gay at all. Nope.
8 May 2007 at 1:01 pm Eastern
Rufus Wainwright is mine.
8 May 2007 at 1:02 pm Eastern
i need to set you up with my friend trista.
8 May 2007 at 1:51 pm Eastern
The Band should have won it all.
I agree with whoever said Zeppelin and Floyd both suck. Robert Plant is annoying, Page misses notes constantly, John Paul Jones was a nonentity and Bonham… well, Bonham deserved to be in a better band. Floyd were about at edgy as a beach ball.
The Beatles will and should win, given what’s left.
8 May 2007 at 2:00 pm Eastern
i need to set you up with my friend trista.
Not actually, Hayley - read the comment before mine. (Thus implying double should-not-be-fixed-up)

Gotcha.
8 May 2007 at 8:27 pm Eastern
David will always win in my heart.
9 May 2007 at 5:15 am Eastern
Officially AFI will always win in my heart but David Bowie will always come in 2nd
9 May 2007 at 7:25 am Eastern
Officially AFI will always win in my heart but David Bowie will always come in 2nd
Well, officially, Bandmadness.netcorp decides who ends up in what place in your heart, and AFI is no better than 8th place.

Wouldn’t that be no better then 9th place? I don’t recall AFI making it into the Elite 8. And even 9th would really be pushing it since there being in the Sweet 16 was a total sham.
9 May 2007 at 10:08 am Eastern
Oh good, we’re whining about AFI.
9 May 2007 at 10:15 am Eastern
Damn, cant believe Floyd is losing. I think Gilmour is one of the most under-rated guitarists of all time
9 May 2007 at 3:07 pm Eastern
Definitely. To most, fast guitarists=good guitarists. Gilmour isn’t fast, but he can convey so much emotion through his guitar that he easily belongs on a “Top 10 Guitarists of All Time” list.
9 May 2007 at 9:57 pm Eastern
Lets not talk about that little emo band called AFI okaaay?
10 May 2007 at 2:09 am Eastern
okaaay
10 May 2007 at 9:41 am Eastern
i figured the beatles were going to win, but not by a blow-out?
10 May 2007 at 9:46 am Eastern
I guess they’re simply considerably better. But where’s the madness? Couldn’t you start a new side-poll that would somehow lure the AFI-nutcases here again?
10 May 2007 at 11:27 am Eastern
I DO BELIEVE THAT AFI IS PLAYED-OUT IN THIS TOURNAMENT…
10 May 2007 at 1:50 pm Eastern
I DO BELIEVE THAT AFI IS PLAYED-OUT IN THIS TOURNAMENT…
A-FUCKING-MEN

Has Liabach turned in his essay yet?

I DO BELIEVE THAT AFI IS PLAYED-OUT IN THIS TOURNAMENT…
A-FUCKING-MEN
haha…
10 May 2007 at 3:24 pm Eastern
This website is still the first and only place I have even heard of AFI.
What a trip…it’s like going to the bottom of the ocean and finding a whole new species that you didn’t even know existed.
10 May 2007 at 3:31 pm Eastern
I feel like the inherent sanity in the Beatles possibly winning is actually, in a weird way, more unexpected than something crazy happening. Last year, Zeppelin lost to Depeche Mode, Bowie was unbeatable because of all the DM and NIN traffic (then lost to NIN), and Pink Floyd straight-up beat The Beatles.
10 May 2007 at 3:32 pm Eastern
THE REASON YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM IS BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT THAT GOOD…OK BUT NOT GOOD.
10 May 2007 at 6:14 pm Eastern
As an AFI fan, i speak for all when i say “All we are saying, is give AFI a chance”
10 May 2007 at 11:35 pm Eastern
And why your at it give chlamydia a chance.
11 May 2007 at 5:34 am Eastern
AcidBarrett420, you’re being sarcastic, aren’t you? Substituting “peace” with AFI just doesn’t feel right, does it…? Well, it probably was a joke and I just make an ass of myself by replying
11 May 2007 at 10:39 am Eastern
Beatles vs. Zeppelin..exactly what I thought would happen.
We should have ended up with Metallica vs. Weird Al. Now that would have been a competition to end all competitions.
And can I just say I am sick and tired of hearing about American Idol? What a load of crap. One more word about Blake and I swear I’m gonna do some damage. Who cares if he came from Bothell? I don’t give a flying (or sitting) fuck! The only thing in Bothell are a bunch of drug addicts.
11 May 2007 at 2:50 pm Eastern
WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE THE BEATLES WILL BE THE OVERALL WINNER OF THE TOURNAMENT.
